The new claimant did not touch the score. They touched the same place on their own finger instead.
On R+161, Darae asked them to describe the mark against the agreed reference direction. A short diagonal beneath the folded end, the person said, nearer the edge without the thread. It should stop before the corner. They had once mistaken it for a crack and checked it under a lamp. The mark had stayed short afterward.
Garam set the protected bookmark for the authorised exterior view. A score occupied the described area. Darae compared the position and extent rather than treating the claimant's remembered lamp as proof. The remaining identity and loss-history checks were still necessary. The person waited while Sodam finished them.
The general shape belonged to the making group. Several members had folded the ends over the same guide, they explained. Some had bent a little differently after use. Darae could see why the first inquiry had begun plausibly without disclosing it to this claimant. She asked about the thread within the current comparison, not the names of everyone who had made one.
One knot, the person said. The end had been cut roughly because they had borrowed unsuitable scissors. They began to apologise for that, then stopped. Garam's recorded exterior view matched the uneven end. No one had trimmed it here. The person was glad. A neat end would have made them less certain.
Sodam looked at the protection, where a slight kink held the thread away from the metal. Darae could hear yesterday's assumption waiting in the silence: a second knot. She left it unspoken. Today's account and the actual view could finish their own comparison without retelling another person's uncertainty.
The required checks completed. Darae explained the handling history retained by the counter and asked whether the owner wanted to receive the bookmark today. Yes. They had brought a narrow personal case, soft inside, that closed over the metal without forcing its bend. Garam checked the proposed protection under the actual handling conditions.
The case was long enough for the metal and too short for the thread laid straight. The owner began winding the end around a finger. Garam asked them to wait while the bookmark remained in counter custody. They could arrange the thread without pulling on its attachment. A case that shut was not necessarily a case that protected every part.
“I brought the case I thought a bookmark deserved.”
“It's allowed more room than its job title,” Darae said.
They tried the empty case first. Sodam supplied a blank strip for the limited fit comparison. It pressed the intended fold of thread at the hinge. The owner watched, then put the case away. No actual bookmark had been used as a test piece. A failed fit did not require damage to make its point.
The person had a larger personal pouch, but its interior contained loose items. They could reorganise it outside the checking space without spreading those belongings across the workbench. Darae kept the bookmark protected while they did so. Today was not a timed examination in how little luggage one could bring.
When the pouch returned, the proposed support and fastening were suitable under the current checks. The thread could rest loosely within its own protected space. The owner chose a direction in which the score would remain away from the closing edge. Garam prepared the handover. Darae checked the item against its intake once more, then watched the receiving hands.
The bookmark passed to its owner. Sodam recorded receipt after it happened. The two tags in storage remained two. Another object's completed return could make the counter feel lighter without changing the wrong count. Darae said the intake number aloud, and the owner confirmed the possession in their hands.
They asked whether they could tell her something unnecessary. Darae smiled. They had time for something unnecessary if the person wanted. The rough thread had come from the hem of an old work shirt, they said. There had been no plan to make a keepsake. It was the thread available when everyone else reached for a length.
Did the shirt still exist? Sodam began, then looked at the owner. They laughed. Yes, although it had lost several other useful pieces. Darae did not put the garment into the identification record. The score and the other necessary checks had done that work. A story offered after receiving could remain a conversation.
The owner closed the pouch. At the passage, they checked the instructions for carrying it toward the habitation ring. Garam connected the handling question to the responsible staff beyond the office. Darae requested no photograph beside the owner's favourite book. The bookmark had gone back without the counter becoming a library visitor.
After the person left, Sodam put the failed-fit blank away. Two possible owners, one real return. She said she was glad the first person had found their own too. Darae agreed. Neither had needed the counter to decide whose relief was more deserved. The unneeded small case had gone home with its owner, not into another intake.
The tag owner's message waited until afternoon. Their chosen collector had agreed to visit on R+162. The owner supplied the required authority through the existing checked route. Darae read it before accepting the appointment's purpose. One sentence permitted seeing the tag and discussing protection; another said the collector could bring it home.
Home referred to which place? Sodam asked. The owner had already specified their chosen destination in the private arrangement, but the shorter authority did not carry that distinction clearly. Darae asked for clarification without forwarding the owner's personal details to a wider list. The proposed collector also needed to understand what they were agreeing to carry.
The owner replied that they had shortened it to avoid making a fuss. Darae could understand that impulse. She did not turn a small tag into a ceremonial cargo. The short wording simply needed to distinguish the collector's receiving and carrying authority from a decision about permanent keeping. They could do that in a few plain sentences.
Could the visit stay on tomorrow's schedule? For an explanation and protection check, yes. Actual handover would depend on the required authority and current checks being complete. The collector would be told that scope before travelling. Nobody had to arrive expecting a completed return and discover the question only at the bench.
Darae sent the appointment's actual purpose and received acknowledgment. Both tags remained under current protection. One owner still chose continued storage; the other now had an agreed person and a visit in preparation. They had advanced without a fictitious receipt. Sodam's note was shorter than the original authority and much clearer.
Her break began late, with a real colleague taking the bench. In the habitation ring, Darae found Mujin looking into an empty food container. It had held something better five minutes ago, he said. Was he hoping looking would bring it back? He was checking whether he had missed a corner. She sat after asking.
Their shifts left little shared time. He told her a sentence from his book had annoyed him. It looked wise until he tried to say what it meant. Darae suggested reading it aloud in his ordinary voice. He did. It still annoyed him, but now she could hear the question beneath the performance. They laughed more quietly than the table beside them.
She wanted to hold his hand before returning. He offered the one that had not been inside the container. The clarification was unnecessary and appreciated. They had a few minutes, not a whole evening, and she let them remain a few minutes. He would read something else after his next assignment. She would eat something not yet missing from a box.
Back at the counter, the bookmark owner acknowledged arrival at their own storage place. The larger pouch had worked under the actual route, and the possession had been received there. Darae entered the final acknowledgment within the intake. No request came for a replacement thread. Its uneven end could remain part of ordinary use.
The audit recipient also sent a bounded next question. The historical sleeve's return appeared after the documented bundle transport, but its recorded empty state had been copied from a later handling note. They would need the relevant source face and responsible account before aligning those events. Darae linked the request without moving today's tag statuses into the old timeline.
At home she opened a drawer and found three cases smaller than the things she had bought them for. She laughed once, put them back and selected an ordinary bag for tomorrow. Not every private observation required a correction campaign. Before sleeping she checked the next-shift summary: a collector would come to discuss carrying one tag. The protection could be tried empty first. This time, a person had been told what the visit would really hold.
