The photograph showed two knots. It did not show the rest of the book, and Darae was glad the owner of the photograph had left it that way.
On R+160, the claimant supplied the agreed crop through the comparison route. Beside it came their explanation of when and why they remembered taking the image. Darae could compare the visible thread and metal end without claiming that every detail of the account had acquired the photograph's certainty. The image had a limited job at this counter.
Sodam brought up the result of yesterday's exterior check. One knot had been distinguished within the inspected length, with no alteration to the thread. An apparent second crossing had been a fold. That was not the same as proving the bookmark had never possessed another knot. Darae placed the two results side by side and wrote what each actually showed.
The claimant asked to hear it before coming in again. Darae described the visible difference. They were quiet, then asked whether the counter thought they had been lying. No. Several similar bookmarks existed by their own account. A difference was worth checking before somebody received the wrong one.
“I was so pleased when I saw the notice.”
“You can be pleased and still ask us to stop.”
The person made a small sound Darae could not interpret. They wanted to stop the return preparation. The item did not yet match well enough for them to receive it. Darae recorded the result within the current identification procedure. She did not write false claim beside somebody who had supplied the very material exposing the difference.
Could the thread have been retied while it was here? Garam's handling record showed it unchanged at the counter. The finder had described the object alone, with its thread in the recorded condition. Those were the present grounds they could provide. Darae guaranteed no complete history between the old photograph and the finding. The person understood. They would keep looking for their own.
Sodam checked the public notice. It had not promised a unique handmade bookmark, but her draft reply had called it your bookmark before the comparison finished. She brought that sentence to Darae without waiting for somebody to find it. The earlier message remained in the inquiry history. Sodam sent a correction through the same route: the found bookmark, with ownership still under checking.
It sounded colder, she said after sending it. Darae looked at the rest of the reply. They had thanked the person for supplying the distinguishing photograph and explained the next step. A necessary noun did not have to carry all the kindness by itself. Sodam read the whole message once and left it alone.
The former claimant asked whether they could tell somebody else from the bookmark-making group about the notice. Darae gave the public link. No private finder description or complete distinguishing-mark list went with it. They could send the link, and anyone believing the object was theirs could inquire directly. The counter did not need a group member list.
The person had almost offered exactly that. They laughed at themselves. There were people they had not spoken to recently; searching for a small object had briefly made every old contact feel like a necessary witness. Darae said the public notice was enough to pass on for now. Renewing a friendship was not one of the identity checks.
After the call, Garam returned the bookmark to its recorded protection. It had not travelled, yet its place in the inquiry had changed. One possible owner had stepped back. That did not make the object more ownerless than yesterday. Darae checked the present contact status rather than asking Catalog to choose from the photograph. The software knew only the fields they gave it.
Before lunch, the tag owner called with a possible collector's name. Darae kept the name within the private intake record. Had the person agreed to act? They had agreed to discuss it, the owner said. They had not agreed on a visit. A possible collector remained possible.
The owner wanted the tag at their own chosen storage place, not permanently at the collector's home. Would the office have to inspect that place? Darae described the information needed under the actual return arrangement. They were not starting a home survey. Suitable protection, the collector's authority, the receiving route and final acknowledgment could be established without distributing photographs of the room.
That was good. The owner did not want a picture of the tag on a wall sent back to prove gratitude. Darae had requested no such thing. She said so plainly. For a moment the person sounded embarrassed. They had not meant to accuse her. It was all right to ask, she answered. They were choosing a route whose limits should be clear before using it.
They would talk with the possible collector that evening. Darae supplied the counter's actual hours and the appointment procedure. Nothing required tomorrow's visit. Two tags remained in storage, one by a positive current choice and one awaiting a receiving method. Sodam's shift note used those separate states without a sigh at the number.
A carrier arrived with equipment for the neighbouring desk and stopped at the corrected direction sign. Garam pointed out the receiving place without taking the equipment into custody here. Today's small success needed no new notice. The carrier's arrival and the neighbouring worker's receipt were enough. The earlier misdelivery had led to a usable direction rather than another folder of apologies.
Darae ate with Seo in the habitation ring. He had bought a cup that was difficult to hold in one particular direction. Could she advise him? He turned it, showing a loop that pressed his knuckle. She asked whether he wanted her to look or help find another. Only look, he said. He liked the cup otherwise.
“An unusually clear request.”
“I've been listening to you.”
She examined no purchase record. They drank while he tried holding it with the other hand. He would ask the household-mending group about a removable cover. A technician's hands could need ordinary comfort too, without the cup becoming a maintenance project.
The audit route delivered a request concerning an empty protective sleeve recorded after the historical bundle's transport. The requesting worker wanted to compare its return with the property movement. Darae forwarded the relevant retained references within the assigned scope. An empty sleeve's movement might illuminate handling. It could not be substituted for the tags having reached their owners.
Jingyeong acknowledged that distinction. Her earlier combined explanation remained. Darae read the acknowledgment once, then worked on the next ordinary intake. There was a limit to how much a current clerk could improve the past by staring at it between customers. Today still required an actual person at the bench.
Near closing, a new bookmark inquiry arrived. The person did not begin with the coloured thread. They described a short score beneath the folded metal end, where they had caught it against a bookcase edge. Darae had not published that area in detail. She opened the appropriate comparison rather than announcing that an unpublished clue must prove ownership.
The person also explained that their thread had one knot. Someone had sent them the public notice. Was it the earlier claimant? Darae did not disclose another person's inquiry. The new claimant volunteered the connection without being asked: a friend from the old making group had shared the link, saying this might be one of theirs.
Could they come tomorrow? They matched the proposed time to an available checking appointment. The necessary identity checks and exterior examination would happen then. Darae advised suitable personal carrying protection if the identification completed and the person wished to collect. Bringing a bag would not itself finish the return.
Garam checked whether the score could be viewed without unbending the end. It could, within the current exterior handling. The bookmark remained protected. No tool was brought out to straighten an old mark for better reading. Darae sent the appointment confirmation, then checked that the evening worker had the actual inquiry and current custody state.
At home she wanted no book. That surprised her briefly. She washed a small container, made something warm and stood beside the window while it cooled. A reading habit did not require another page every evening. Mujin sent a greeting. She told him she was enjoying not understanding any sentences at all.
He replied that it sounded efficient. She asked whether he had eaten. Yes. They exchanged a few ordinary complaints about food containers whose lids required too much ambition. Neither asked for a call. Darae left the terminal within reach and ate without making its screen the centre of the table.
Before bed, the first claimant's final reply arrived through the work route and went to the responsible evening worker. Darae saw it only in the next-shift summary she was authorised to receive: they had found their two-knot bookmark inside a paperback lent to a neighbour. They had collected their own book and bookmark. No finder details or neighbour's address were needed at this counter.
The found bookmark here still had one knot. Tomorrow another hand would turn toward the small score beneath its metal end. Darae closed the summary on that distinction. Two people could have been looking for nearly the same shape, and one happy ending did not have to borrow the other's object.
