The collector brought a bag large enough for a meal and a document folder. The tag would have occupied less room than either, which explained almost nothing about the protection it needed.
On R+162, Darae checked the agreed appointment. The owner's clarified authority had arrived through the established route before opening. It named the collector's receiving and carrying role and the chosen destination. It did not grant decisions about display, repair or permanent storage. The collector had received that scope and could explain it in ordinary words.
“I take it there. I don't find a better place for it on the way.”
“That sounds right,” Darae said.
The required identity checks followed. Familiarity between two people had not been supplied as a substitute. The collector waited while Sodam compared the current record. Garam kept both tags in protection until they had the handling space and the correct intake ready. The tag choosing continued storage did not come out because another was due to leave.
The collector opened the document folder. It had a stiff middle and a closure at one side. They had thought it might work as backing. Garam inspected the proposed use with it empty. The closure pressed inward when the folder shut. A wide, flat object could still have a narrow bad place.
Darae asked whether the folder was needed for its own documents. Yes. They belonged to the collector, who had another errand after this one. No need to explain those pages. Garam returned the empty folder before it became an improvised shared surface. The counter could test protection without reading the other reasons somebody carried a bag.
The collector had brought a second personal support after discussing it with the owner. It lay within a soft wrap, separate from the meal and folder. They had nearly left it at home because it looked excessive. Darae made no joke at its expense. It was the actual alternative available, so they checked it rather than arguing about how small a tag looked.
A blank of matching size rested within the proposed protection. Garam showed where the closure's load went. The collector opened and closed it with the blank secured, then tried the grip needed at the workbench. Sodam observed without asking the collector to prove a passage movement here. Conditions beyond the counter belonged with the responsible passage staff and current route guidance.
The wrap had enough room. The collector could secure it in the bag without pressing it against the document folder. The meal container would travel in a separate compartment. Darae enjoyed that particular division of responsibilities. An owner could ask a friend to carry a tag without making lunch a threat that nobody was allowed to mention.
“Should I apologise for bringing food?”
“Only if you've brought enough to distract the whole counter.”
The collector laughed. They had not. Garam checked the fastening once more, and the small amusement ended without making the handling casual. The blank came out. The actual tag entered the checking place under its existing protection.
The name was visible. Darae read the intake against the owner's confirmed details. The collector did not turn it over for curiosity. Their authority covered the necessary comparison and receiving arrangement, not every private mark the owner might someday want to show them. Garam retained the required exterior handling scope as the tag moved into the chosen support.
Before receipt, the collector asked for a pause. Their bag was secured awkwardly against the workbench handhold; closing its compartment would pull the wrap toward the edge. Garam kept the tag under counter custody while they changed the empty bag's restraint. Nobody had to pretend a final pose was correct because all the earlier checks had gone well.
Now the closure could be reached without stretching over the tag. Darae asked whether the collector was ready. Yes. Garam completed the physical handover into the agreed protection. The collector received it and confirmed the intake. Sodam entered that action after the receiving hands had closed around the protected support.
The stored tag count became one.
Darae looked at that number long enough to see precisely what it meant. One tag had left the counter through the appointed collector today. Arrival at the owner's chosen destination still lay ahead. The remaining tag stayed protected under its own continued-storage conditions. A subtraction could be accurate without describing an entire return journey.
The collector closed the bag and asked where to obtain the next passage guidance. Garam connected them to the current responsible staff, as arranged. They would undertake the separate errand only within the agreed carrying plan; the tag would not be handed to the document desk for convenience. Darae confirmed the destination acknowledgment route once. The collector had it.
At the exit they turned back. The owner had wanted to come personally, they said, then decided asking somebody was possible after all. Darae required no account of what had made that hard. The collector had not come to represent the owner's feelings at the counter. They gave a small nod and went to the responsible passage worker.
Sodam folded the unused restraint. She had expected the owner to call during the handover. Their prior checked authority and current arrangement had been sufficient. An owner did not have to stand invisibly behind every receiving hand, Darae said. Sodam looked at the now empty position and removed no historical label without checking its management instructions.
The one remaining owner received the agreed routine custody update through their existing route. It concerned their own tag's protection and current status. They were not urged to follow today's example. Choosing continued storage had not become a slower wrong answer because the next protected space was empty. The owner acknowledged the information without changing their choice.
The afternoon brought a folded fabric pouch found at another desk. Darae asked whether that desk had an identified owner and existing return process. It did. The inquiry was about borrowing protective equipment, not transferring a lost-property case. Garam directed the equipment question to its current custodian. The pouch stayed with the responsible desk. Even on a good day, the office did not need to collect every nearby ending.
Jingyeong's audit supplement came later. The copied note about the historical sleeve had described its condition when it reached a later checking point. Its writer had not witnessed the sleeve becoming empty. Darae recorded the bounded account beside the preserved source. No one could use the word empty to erase an earlier stretch they had not seen.
The actual assembly-area handling record was still being sought through the assigned route. Darae supplied the already authorised reference and no wider private tag material. Jingyeong asked whether the current appointed return had completed. Counter handover had; destination receipt had not. She repeated both parts without compressing them. Darae accepted the accurate present wording while the old explanation remained where it belonged.
During her break, Darae bought a meal she could eat without opening three lids. Mujin was elsewhere on assignment. She sent a greeting and finished eating before checking for a reply. Beyond the window, a restrained cleaning cloth made a slow loose curve where somebody had left too much length. A worker took hold of it before continuing. Darae did not need to supervise.
After work she went to the household-mending group. The session was ordinary personal time. Seo showed the removable cup cover he had tried; it had made the loop easier to hold and the cup harder to fit into its usual place. The group considered the problem without volunteering him for a lifetime of vessel redesign. Darae helped count the needles back when the agreed activity ended.
She had brought nothing to mend. Someone asked whether she had come only to talk. That had been the plan. She felt a brief foolish need to justify an empty-handed visit, then let it pass. Listening while somebody chose a thread colour was enough to occupy a chair. She did not have to become useful every minute she was present.
The collector's update reached the responsible evening worker. They had completed the agreed passage segment and retained custody of the protected tag. The owner would receive it at the arranged place on R+163, as the current plan allowed. No destination receipt had been claimed. Darae saw the status in the next-shift summary when she returned home.
Mujin called after asking whether she had time. She did, for a little while. He had lost his place in the book without losing the bookmark. Darae said this was technically possible. He asked whether her office classified it. Only if the page came in by itself. They laughed, and she heard how tired he was before he said he would sleep soon.
She wanted to hear the sentence he had reached, but tomorrow could hold it. They ended the call without promising an early reply. On her desk lay a plain fabric square from the mending group, given freely after she admired its colour. She put it beside her book without inventing an immediate purpose.
One tag remained at the counter. Another had a real carrier and a destination not yet reached. The next morning would begin with that distinction, and with the receiving hands that still had to close the distance between it.
