The line ran below the number, not across it.
On the morning of R+145, the original-record worker supplied a restricted comparison face. From the prescribed orientation, the mark that had resembled an erasure was a printed divider beneath the quantity field. It had reproduced darkly on only one copy.
Darae looked between explanation and image. No ink broke in the number's lower edge. The line continued at the same height beneath an adjacent empty field. Those were visible grounds. She stopped asking who had drawn it. A printed line needed no invented hand.
Should yesterday's suspicion disappear? Sodam asked. Darae would retain that today's comparison resolved the question of a possible correction. Erasing the mistaken question might leave the next worker to stop at the same copy. Clean paper could create the same work twice.
She did not stretch this into no changes anywhere in the quantity history. The comparison explained one line. Making that answer larger would repeat yesterday's mistake in another direction. She sent the limited result through Jingyeong's existing audit route.
Jingyeong replied that a later organizing note had once classified this copy as quantity-correction material. Darae reread it. Her own present impression and someone's historical classification were different facts. She had not received that classification face yet; she requested the relevant permitted field.
Three knocks sounded outside. A communal repair worker held a short cord for personal mending tools in the rotating ring, not the broad equipment restraints of axial cargo. The worker distinguished it before approaching.
A person's tag remained attached. Could it match one of the four waiting tags? Darae joined nothing by name alone. The visitor had not seen their complete contents and might have misunderstood. She logged today's object, visible mark and finding place as a new intake.
The four stayed protected. The existing inquiry route could reach the relevant person. She did not display old and new tags together for the visitor. A seeming match disclosed no right to someone else's waiting.
Garam found a small insert pocket rather than a tag stitched to the cord. One face was legible without removing the paper. They kept handling there. The pocket's readable face supplied no reason to draw the paper out now. Today's condition included its present fold and position. If further viewing was needed, the person and responsible handler could choose that next movement rather than have it performed in advance. Darae first asked whether the name identified the current user.
Before lunch the person replied that this might be a communal mending bundle once borrowed, with their tag temporarily inserted. They could not inspect it today. That was no claim to own the cord. Darae sent no early congratulations for finding a personal possession.
Was there a little split in the inner fold? Garam described only what the permitted exterior view allowed. Opening it required further handling. The person asked them to leave the tag inside for now and check the communal record. Having a name on it need not make the whole object return to that hand.
Sodam had expected the four-tag count to fall. Once she had put her name on a borrowed cup and returned it unchanged, she admitted. Had it remained called Sodam? Darae asked.
“I didn't ask.”
“And today gives us no reason to.”
The visitor relaxed with their laughter and could receive a later answer. There was no requirement to stand at the counter until every record arrived, or to carry a doubtful object away while waiting. Darae explained the receiving route as well as the question still outstanding. The answer would not have to find an empty place where a person had been. Darae repeated who presently held the cord. It did not leave the counter merely following a name.
The audit classification arrived that afternoon. Quantity correction verified cited yesterday's first copy. Nothing supplied said the writer had compared an actual change to the original quantity. Darae read it beside today's divider explanation. An inference had become a category heading and ended the question.
She asked whether further authorship and timing lay within her authorized request. The audit worker would decide that scope. Her counter explained custody states and provided grounds; helping required no collection of every record here. Jingyeong would send the comparison to its designated owner.
Her supplement did not conclude that quantity had never changed. This copy's line could not establish a quantity correction. Actual quantity changes needed their own records. Those sounded almost identical to Sodam. The first would finish matters they had not examined, Darae said.
She drank after noticing her dry throat. Explaining what present material did not say took longer than asking whether an object was still here. An intake number could not replace a person. A classification title could not replace a fact either.
The communal record connected the borrowed bundle to today's account. The cord was communal equipment; its name pocket had distinguished work in progress. The custodian would receive the actual object and arrange the separate tag return. Darae did not mark an unreceived tag complete.
Permission to remove it arrived through the existing route. Under Garam's specified handling the pocket opened, revealing the described little split. A matching detail did not make the cord personal property. Darae placed paper and communal cord on separate supports.
The communal custodian actually took the cord. The tag awaited acknowledgment through its owner's chosen receiving route. One new paper, distinct from the original protected four. Sodam read its intake marker first. Four plus one did not establish five people.
The tag projected from Sodam's small protective pocket. Folding would make it fit, she began, then looked at Darae. Their convenient storage size need not alter the owner's object. A different protective face held it flat. Names could survive folds; there was no reason to supply a new one today. The paper's end now lay within the protective face without being shortened or tucked under. Sodam checked the separate intake marker again before setting it in custody. A better-sized holder changed their storage arrangement, not the ownership of the sheet it held.
Must the person also take this oversized protection? Sodam asked. It was their custody tool; the recipient could choose transport. Sodam's lunch sometimes became larger because of its packaging. Remove the unused box from her bag before shrinking lunch, Darae suggested. The box might be needed. Today's unused box earned another short laugh.
The questions stood at different heights. An unestablished correction had attached to a copy; a temporary personal name remained on a communal cord. Neither first heading supplied the answer. They still belonged in separate returns and separate reports.
Before handover the audit recipient read back the printed-divider limit. The copy alone could not prove a quantity correction. Further quantity comparison would use separate records. Darae's explanation had reached its place. Jingyeong's responsibility had received no final judgment.
Darae told Mujin she wanted rest in her own room tonight. He agreed and asked her to say when she wanted another meeting. She attached no immediate date, but asked about time after tomorrow's work. Saying she wished to rest today had not required a substitute meeting tomorrow. She could still ask about it because she wanted to. His time would need an answer from his actual schedule, just as hers did. He named when his schedule might become firm. Their arrangement still held room for a real answer.
At home she put blank paper beside the bowl drawing. She wanted to make something else. Her new bowl looked so shallow it resembled a plate. Writing bowl would not improve its shape. Laughing, she added a line for depth.
She did not immediately photograph it. The real paper could come to their next meeting. The declined request for portraits stayed declined. Drawing two bowls merged no homes. She gave the second a smaller size without assigning either person's share.
His schedule was not firm yet. She did not hang all her rest on that answer. Tomorrow morning was fine, she sent, putting the terminal to charge. Her hand almost checked again. Nothing in his message lacked a required greeting. She drank water and opened her book.
Before night deepened, the next work notice arrived. A later audit summary had cited the two copies as evidence of separate object receipts. Had two sheets become two quantities? She did not reopen the resolved divider question. That imagined correction had been withdrawn; an actual written sentence remained.
The new tag's owner could collect it next shift. Darae read the time without advancing her alarm. That receipt belonged to the agreed work period. Four old tags and one new one could not wait on one another's behalf. She switched off the light. Today one line had returned to its place.
