Two papers bearing the same intake number lay side by side. Darae's hand stopped first in the space between them.
On the morning of R+144, the existing audit route provided copies restricted to the relevant fields. One custody time was later than the other. Yesterday she had received the notice without seeing these papers. Today she could read them; that did not bring the old object into view.
She started to align the corners, then stopped. The sheets differed in size. A little line near one lower edge disappeared beyond the other copy's crop. Was that a copying limit or a difference in the original forms? She kept the field names and cut edges beside the times in her notes.
“Did the object come in twice?” Sodam asked.
The number appeared twice on the faces they had received, Darae said. Whether the object had moved twice still needed an explanation. Sodam returned the empty receiving support to its place. Audit copies were not today's physical intake. The support had been meant for an object someone could put down and another person receive. Sodam cleared the space between the sheets instead. The question could remain there without a second invisible object being set on the bench.
One time belonged to the creation of a custody state. Beneath the other similarly named field lay tiny parentheses, half lost at the edge. Darae did not squint missing letters into existence. She requested a legible relevant copy or the responsible worker's explanation, without asking for additional personal names.
Jingyeong acknowledged the request. Whether she had entered that number herself needed comparison with the relevant work history. Darae remembered the old blank address field. A late explanation from someone who had not asked for so long did not make today's timestamp wrong. There were different kinds of late.
Her present counter form separated receiving an object from organizing its custody state. Today's form could not define an old one. She asked whether the definitions in force when these faces were made remained available. The same letters need not describe the same action.
Meanwhile a thin glove arrived from a communal dining tray. No personal name, a short repair seam at one fingertip. Darae received its actual custody state and the existing inquiry route. One glove felt more concrete than either audit sheet.
Sodam nearly tried it on, then stopped. A hand that fitted would not establish ownership. She fetched a support instead. The thought of checking size had arrived before a reason to check it. Her hand could stop before the glove's opening. Darae asked about the inner marking rather than treating a convenient fit as evidence; the actual permitted face was what Garam would examine. Only after the dining worker confirmed permission to view the relevant inner face did Darae ask Garam to check it.
A small thread knot lay inside. A claimant could describe it and offered to bring the other glove that afternoon. Darae recorded a feasible collection time. One receiving hand might gain its object today while the papers' question remained open.
Before lunch a wider relevant copy arrived. The parentheses said copy printed. The large heading still said custody. Darae could now explain at least that later time: it was not evidence of a newly created physical custody state. First they had found the action that made a paper.
That did not yet prove both sheets referred to the same original record. Field meaning and the actual reference link were separate checks. She asked which custody record the output had used. Jingyeong would compare the available relevant work history, rather than fill it from memory.
Sodam exhaled at printed. Darae felt some tension leave too. She kept yesterday's question mark and added the explanation beside it. The way a question changed should remain readable.
“Different times under the same heading must confuse the paper.”
“The paper's fine. We get the extra work.”
Sodam glanced at her print queue. Darae repeated which face they needed before another unnecessary output appeared. One answer required no fresh copy of every paper.
Mujin's scheduled vessel inspection put his lunch later than hers. Darae ate alone. Not yet choosing his home did not require defending the same shared place at every meal. Today was simply her own lunch.
She checked the bowl drawing in her bag. His joke about bringing the real bowl had made the paper seem smaller. She added no border. One drawing need not arrange their next meeting. Getting it through lunch without oil was enough transport work.
The glove's claimant brought the remaining one, keeping it outside the receiving support until Darae named the separate positions. Their repair seams differed. Only the more-used fingertip had been reinforced, the person explained; that difference had almost made them dismiss the found glove.
The owner carefully explained that only the glove used for longer work had needed its fingertip reinforced. Two pieces could belong together without collecting identical repairs. Darae kept that account beside the feature the person had described before arriving, instead of making the brought glove do all the work of identification.
The hidden knot matched the prior description. The other glove supported the account, rather than replacing identification. Nobody forced the pair together to make them match. After actual receipt the owner put both in a bag, then walked away holding it without wearing either.
Warm surroundings might make wearing them unnecessary. Returned and immediately used were different facts. Darae recognized her own wish to finish another person's next movement. She stopped at today's receipt.
The audit reply connected the later output history to the first record's current copy. Relevant supplied grounds supported that link. Darae withdrew the inference that a new custody state had been created at the later time. Jingyeong read back that limited supplement.
Another difference remained. A short dark line in the first quantity field resembled an erasure; it was absent from the second copy. Darae did not simply request enlargement. It exceeded today's output-time explanation. She asked the providing worker whether the visible difference represented an actual alteration of the original.
Only then did she notice her grip whitening her fingertips. Papers about people once omitted still felt heavier than their numbers. Weight could not decide what the line meant. She opened her hand and laid the copies down, matching the scope she knew as carefully as a mass measurement.
Jingyeong said her part in explaining the old record remained. Today's print history did not remove that responsibility, Darae replied. She meant no attack, only the necessary limit. Jingyeong's short acknowledgment left the original question intact.
At handover Sodam said two gloves and two sheets made different counts. Two sheets were not two objects, Darae said. Two gloves were called one pair. That supplied no reason for a new form, she replied. Their laughter shortened the long bench a little.
The designated successor received the copies' permitted scope and remaining question. Four protected tags stayed four. Today's returned glove entered neither side of their count. New questions need not dress an old object's waiting as progress.
Mujin's inspection finished. She asked for a brief call and sat at the agreed rest place on her way out. Here in the rotating ring she could feel weight through her soles; she had not left an axial restraint hanging loosely over her shoulder.
“Paper came in twice today.”
An object? Only paper, she said, ending the work account there. Instead she described liking the sight of bare hands carrying their gloves, without names or finding places. Sometimes his hands felt finished only after he removed gloves too, Mujin said.
She had not called to arrange meeting tonight. She wanted to hear about his day. One secured tool had sat opposite the place his hand kept searching. He had hung it there himself. It was the tool his hand kept searching for, held safely in a position his hand had not expected. That was the whole complaint; no tool had chosen to hide. She asked her next small question with a smile he could hear. Had the tool been in its proper place? Yes. They laughed about a day without blaming their objects.
She made no second promise to bring the drawing. One already existed. Today it remained safely in her bag. His sleeve drawing was still at home too. Remembering things in separate homes created no promise to share one. That distance felt comfortable.
Back alone, she closed her door and took out the drawing. She knew this paper's present place. Hands had once lifted and laid down the audit papers between their times too. Imagination could not put those hands into her notes. Tomorrow's answer would have to arrive.
The next shift notice promised relevant grounds for checking whether the quantity-field line appeared on the original. It was not yet a correction. She left today's copies in designated custody and went to bed. One reason for different times was known. Now the question was whether anything had really been erased.
