The photographed hooks had not moved. Only the file list's order had changed.
On the morning of the next shift, Seorin received the preserved photograph bundle and its caption writer's supplement. One face bore after the hook work. It could be compared with the two fixing positions found on the actual board. No original-camera clock correction had arrived. She placed the brief title beside the photograph as a separate sentence.
The caption writer described grouping supplied pictures with the work record, without taking them or moving the hooks. Where had after come from? The arrival order and attached filenames. One name included a word meaning toward the back. That differed from afterward.
The designated officer checked the preserved filename: rear-side view. It might describe an object's back. Yet this picture showed the board's front at an angle. The photographer had not explained whether it meant the rear of a room. Seorin did not choose a replacement meaning and cover the older misunderstanding with it.
“Did you ask the photographer when you wrote it?”
No. Delivery order and a nearby work sheet had suggested a picture after the repair. She did not write that the caption writer intended a false time from the start. Presently confirmed grounds and an omitted check sufficed to reconsider the caption.
The company officer could obtain the photographer's supplement. Seorin asked to distinguish memory from original time data. Learning what someone called rear did not set their device clock. The uncalibrated 17:56 remained as it was. One word's problem would not solve every time question.
Waiting, she examined a corner. The left dent connected with the present board. One photograph showed the empty hole above a hook. Reflection and angle hid it in another. Not visible could not become not then present. Her wish for before and after had nearly recruited a blind spot as proof. She stopped.
She made an annotated comparison copy, shading the portions presently unreadable. The original photograph remained untouched. Marks identified unavailable views, rather than damage to the object. The company officer nodded at the explanation. Instead of no dark point there, the wording said that position could not be seen. A smaller sentence made a more accurate question.
The photographer replied near morning's end. Rear-side view meant a picture taken from the rear part of the caretaker's office. Neither the back of the board nor after the work. The related layout explanation could locate where the photographer stood. A third possible meaning had arrived. Choosing early could have hidden this one too.
The photographer did not remember taking it after the hook work. The board had been photographed for another check. The work sheet joined the related bundle later. Seorin noted that provision could follow capture. Material inside one envelope did not establish one action on one day.
Through the original-preservation route, the company separately received photograph provision and caption-writing times. Seorin saw only permitted copies and explanations. Worker, photographer and caption writer became different hands. Earlier grounds for actual hook movement remained. Today's changed answer concerned whether this photograph could be called after that work.
The writer would supplement the mistaken interpretation. Would the old title be erased, leaving only the new one? If someone had ordered events from it, that route also mattered. The officer would preserve original caption and present supplement together. Corrected words would not travel backward as if they had already existed.
A later comparison writer had treated the picture as the post-repair state. Seorin returned the caption's narrowed scope. That writer had trusted the title, without witnessing the actual change. Photograph and title-based account returned to the same ground. A list that had seemed to gain witnesses shortened.
She did not call the shorter list a failure. Retaining wrong grounds merely made the next judgment look weightier. The picture had not been discarded, only its unsupported order. Visible forms and related work accounts remained useful. The date joining them had not arrived. The new gap made the next question more exact.
At lunch an inquiry came through Haeun's existing records route. Did this comparison require a new personal explanation from her? After matching scope with the company officer, Seorin answered: no new account had been requested for today's caption-and-photographer comparison. The short inquiry appeared concerned about being left out unless she asked again.
Seorin did not declare that Haeun's inner thought. The inquiry actually ended with wanting to check that her record had not been omitted. Seorin checked the scope retained at existing relevant intake and replied. It was no record of Haeun's whole life. No request today did not erase earlier questions. Haeun acknowledged receiving the distinction.
Walking to lunch, Seorin put her phone in her bag. Receiving a question need not require carrying a terminal all day. Taking a tray left a small interval. At her seat she drank water first. After the white patches of photographs, side dishes brought colour. Today's meal could finish before its paper.
Doun said he had sent another cup drawing. She would look after eating. This time he had reduced the handle. Had he altered his real cup yet? The cup would probably refuse him, he said. She laughed and continued her meal. One deferred answer did not erase their conversation.
Acknowledged receipt of the supplement arrived that afternoon. Yunjae's route distinguished original caption, photographer's explanation and writer's present supplement. The sequence inferred in the later comparison narrowed too. Exact before-and-after order still needed separate material. Seorin left that answer on the page and completed her caption comparison.
Should the remaining object comparison join one summary? The company officer asked. Yesterday's observed board and today's caption source could sit side by side, she said, without a line implying cause between them. Related material differed from one item proving another. Not drawing one line took the longest part of that summary.
She checked her first note in the preserved work record. It had asked provisionally about a photograph after hook work. Today's supplement separately marked that title unestablished. Her first question would not disappear to make her always right. The next officer could see what she suspected and which answer changed it. She decided not to be ashamed of that small trace.
After work she and Doun could walk together as far as a nearby bus stop. No company vehicle served the route. Today she had shortened a title, she said. Was she revising a book title? It concerned work, but the contents stayed there. He understood. They could stop at that point. Withholding detail need not push someone away.
Instead, she had looked at his cup. The smaller handle might admit no finger. He could shrink the finger in the next picture. That fitted a person to a cup, she said. Then he would amend the handle. Laughing, she said her own cup had not passed an actual-use check either.
He still meant to judge his first real support against his own cup. She looked forward to it. This requested no first object for herself. She liked hearing him learn something for his own use. Even evenings when an unfinished maker quietly read his book belonged to what she wanted to know. She said that briefly.
He slowed a little. She did not first decide she had spoken too much. He liked seeing drawings she made alone too, he said. They could share things from hours without each other. She wanted his hand; he agreed. Keeping clear of passing vehicles, they walked side by side.
Near the stop he would say goodbye here today, allowing for the bus's possible arrival. She understood. No missing kiss became a test of disappointment. Before releasing his hand she pressed lightly once with her thumb. He pressed back. That was today's chosen goodbye too.
Home, she set paper and terminal side by side and looked at the cups. The handle on her sheet was large, the screen's small. One drawing existed in her home, the other in his. Closeness did not require collecting them on one table. After looking a moment, she put her paper beside the desk.
His arrival message said he would read before sleep. She wanted that herself. They did not force a longer call. She opened her own book and read the first lines. The day's caption returned to mind; the other material needed to answer it was not at home. She brought her eyes back to the sentence being read.
The existing notice for the next shift announced a supplement from the writer of common recovery complete in a related table. Had that meant counting and receiving actual keys, or completing receipt of hook work? Seorin chose neither first. After returning back to its place, she would ask what object complete had actually received.
