The black loop was not something a hand could lift.
On February 11, the company's designated receipt brought the current material worker's explanation. Within an existing permitted preservation interval, the worker had inspected the back of the label stand. Seorin had entered no site. Yesterday's bent-loop impression came from her view of the new photograph's corner.
A hole pierced the stand, with a thin paper edge curling beneath it. Side light joined the hole's shade to the paper's shadow, making a bent dark line. The worker described the physical state directly. No key or separate loop had been touched or moved. Seorin corrected her own reading of darkness as an object first.
Was the checking direction the same as the camera direction? The worker had rechecked the rear photographing position and used that reference for the explanation. The light angle differed, changing the shadow's length. She retained both facts. This was a current check of the same surface, not a complete recreation of the earlier photographing instant.
Yunjae handled original-file custody and receipt of the supplement. The new copy carried yesterday's corrected wording: ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH FILE CURRENTLY RETAINED. No promise remained about the photographed object's historical custody. The small sentence now pointed to its actual subject.
Doun was checking equipment on another assigned task that morning. She did not run to tell him the loop's answer. Today's material had a permitted audience. Wanting to see him and needing somebody to read work beside her were not reasons she had to force together. She sent her current comparison's closing draft to the company.
The draft retained her initial inference. The copied corner had looked like a loop; the responsible worker's present explanation identified shadows from a hole and curled paper. Writing only misread would remove why the question arose. Turning that into a witness account that no loop had ever existed would change its evidence too.
The key distinction did not belong in tiny end text. This had been a present work stand from the beginning, never confirmed as the old common-key board. Identifying its dark shape had neither located the original key nor moved that separate unknown farther away.
Could the company title it Simple Optical Illusion? Seorin said her eye's mistake could not explain the forwarding note's omitted referent and opposite reference faces. Putting everything into one small error would lose the making of the material. The title became a comparison of the new photograph's current note and reference face.
“What can close now?” Yunjae asked.
The note's addition stage, the thing original described, the camera reference and the current physical explanation of the dark area. Not the original key, envelope or whole historical custody chain. Her spoken answer was longer than she had expected. She did not shorten it into a pleasing conclusion.
The photographer read the distinctions and had nothing further to add. The forwarding worker received corrected and earlier copies separately within the material route. A mistaken sentence could not be silently erased to make the first version always right. Seorin retained new receipt beside what had been received before.
While the last acknowledgment travelled, sunlight reached a desk clip. Its shadow made a longer loop than the metal. She did not try to touch the shadow. Object and light had their separate places. Today she could receive that explanation calmly without requiring it to solve every old dark corner.
Before lunch, Yunjae confirmed the bounded comparison closed. The original case's remaining inquiries continued by their existing route. She acknowledged the end and closed the material window. Finished did not mean everything finished. It still allowed her not to reopen one completed question merely to soothe herself.
At lunch Doun invited her to sit with him. Had the shortened bag strap actually been tried? she asked. It caught less this morning; he had not used it for a whole day yet.
“Enough for the bag's lunch inspection.”
He laughed, then asked about a short walk after work. Her current evening allowed time. Not too long, she said. A nearby public route and somewhere warm suited them both. Yesterday's separate rest need not be repaid by making today's meeting longer.
Their answer about colleagues still stood, she checked. No separate announcement for now; either would speak to the other first if wanting a change. Two adults eating lunch did not need to make their choice either a concealed wrong or news to prove publicly.
Her afternoon took other assigned work. A public-route visit was postponed by a changed schedule. She did not fill every spare minute by enlarging the finished photograph. Current document work could be completed and water taken at a break, even on days when a closed question kept calling her hands.
In the rest area Doun asked one brief equipment question and went back to his place. She caught herself expecting every workplace word to become tender after their choice. He had actual tasks here. The evening agreement had not disappeared inside a short professional exchange. She smiled alone and washed her cup.
Just before the end of work, a new Eundam proposal arrived through the company. This was no request for more pictures. Heo Jeongu had offered a time through the existing response route for an additional account of his past settings work. No content had arrived. Scope and participants still needed agreement.
She sat and read slowly. Yunjae made clear that the offer implied possession of neither original files nor key. It concerned distinguishing the work Jeongu had been assigned from the words he had actually received. No condition authorised Seorin to question him as police or seek private contact.
The company asked about her possible support within the existing submitted questions. She checked the route and current consent first. Jeongu agreed to leave an account with the responsible responder, not to a personal meeting or unlimited contact. A person willing to speak had not opened the rest of their time to everyone.
She would answer attendance once the real role fitted. Her first impulse was not to cancel the evening with Doun. No interview was happening today. The company confirmed that its conditions could arrive at tomorrow's designated receipt. She wrote the new question, arranged her work and left at the agreed time.
Cold air met her outside. Doun waited on the public pavement. Could she walk today? Yes, slowly. He shortened his stride. Feeling her own shoulders high, she let her breath out first. He asked no immediate reason on her behalf.
She said a new work proposal had left her thinking, without conveying particular material or somebody's statement. Did she want work talk or another subject? Another subject now, she said.
He returned to his bag. Shortening the strap had changed where his hand found an inner pocket. Small changes to familiar things were more troublesome than expected. Her scarf knot could send her bag strap slipping on another side, she said. Their bodies kept finding fresh paths around little objects. They laughed quietly.
On a broad pavement stretch he wanted to hold hands. She agreed before he offered his. This time she felt him through gloves, unlike the bare palms at the exhibition. The sensation did not need to match to carry the same willingness. She walked at her own pace beside him, leaving room for passing people beyond them.
They released hands before the public shop, entered separately and chose seats. Seorin wanted a view of the door. Doun took another available place. Her ability to sit did not depend on appointing him a guard opposite. She saw the current exit herself and received her drink. Today that much was enough.
New questions sometimes made using good time feel forbidden, she said. Rest could make him feel he was avoiding an answer too, Doun replied. She appreciated hearing his own experience. Similar feelings did not merge their responsibilities. They could still speak separately across the same table.
She wanted to do tomorrow's actual work tomorrow and drink something warm today. He wanted that too. The answer was short. Instead of reading his expression to its furthest edge, she lifted her cup and let her fingers warm. Today's permission did not require defeating every difficult question in advance.
Outside, they chose separate home routes. He would name the next possible meeting after checking his time; she would do the same. Wanting to see each other had been confirmed again without opening every date. She did not fill that space with evidence that he was leaving.
They messaged on their actual arrivals. At home the exhibition leaflet's corner had curled. It could make a shadow too. She smoothed it and smiled. A hand flattening paper and a hand returning the past were different things.
Next morning, the company supplied the proposed interview conditions. February 13, morning, within the current place and scope handled by Yunjae. Seorin's role would be supporting distinctions about time and assignments within questions already submitted. No key search, envelope opening or fresh access was included.
She accepted that role with the company and Yunjae. Jeongu's final consent would be checked again through the designated route. No answer from him had yet been heard. She packed her bottle and an empty notebook. The first sentence she meant to ask was not a number: when told to do that work, whose words had he actually heard, and what had they said?
