Original referred to the photograph, not the object.
On February 10, Seorin read the scope of Yunjae's new material through the company. The current assigned worker had photographed a permitted site section. Neither the completed two-photo comparison nor the third-envelope-photograph inquiry had reopened. Today's question concerned the making of one edge note: who put it there, when and what it described.
At the small corner of the copy stood ORIGINAL RETAINED. Below it, a cropped dark surface resembled part of an object. She did not name a key or envelope. Did the note mean custody of the original image file, or custody of the thing photographed? One noun could acquire different work after it.
Yunjae already had the present location, risk and people account, he explained. It was permitted preservation work; the photograph had been taken in a free interval. No authority asked her to enter or open anything. She accepted only the questions about authorship that could be received remotely.
Doun checked his own role with the company. No driving assignment, no current equipment support. He did not approach her desk to ask about viewing the photograph together. Knowing past work did not make him an automatic reader of new material. She appreciated the distinction in his action without having to make a speech about it.
The company asked the sender for the actual note writer. Photographer and annotating worker were different people. The photographer had put the original file into designated custody. The forwarding worker added a small note when making a copy. Those words had not been present on the site object.
Seorin placed that answer first.
“Original of what?”
The photograph file retained by its maker, the forwarding worker replied. It confirmed no custody of the dark object in the frame. The explanation did not make the words a lie, Seorin said, but left room for a recipient to read another meaning. The worker acknowledged omitting photograph.
The photographer could explain the retained file and their camera position. They had not checked the target object's full previous custody. They knew the current assignment and permitted section. She did not make them a fresh witness to the old key. Their sight had an end they could name.
The visible corner belonged to the back of an empty label stand used for current work distinctions. It was not the old board carrying Eundam's common keys. Similar form could not make them one object. She felt the photograph touching the empty key place in her own memory.
She looked away and drank water. She wanted the original key to have returned. That wish was not a clue. Before the responsible person's explanation the dark corner had been unknown; afterwards the target's entire past was still unknown. A limited answer could keep its own edges.
Yunjae arranged for the responsible people to compare file and copy. Seorin downloaded no original to her own device. Within the authorised custody route she saw the permitted general part and the copy's note position. The original had no note. Writing occupied only the forwarded border.
The forwarding worker had hoped to prevent a request for the original file's return. A helpful sentence had sounded like a promise about another thing's custody. Seorin did not demand a longer explanation of intention. What wording would now be accurate?
“Original photograph file currently retained.”
Yunjae received the actual custodian and acknowledgment. She did not replace that handover. Her comparison covered the added note's stage and meaning. The original key's location, the original envelope's opening and its complete custody history remained elsewhere. One small sentence could not close a larger unknown in their place.
She sent the company what could finish and what remained. The forwarding stage had added the words, which concerned an image file. The current worker had described the target's general form. The exact source of the corner's shadow still could not be named from this copy alone.
For a moment the black portion looked like a bent loop. Enlargement softened its edge. Bigger pixels did not enlarge an object's memory. Increasing a cropped view from the same original could not create a fresh surface. The actual photographer's position explanation mattered more.
It could not arrive immediately. The worker was on duty and could answer at the designated time. Seorin searched for no private contact and made no personal demand to hurry. Yunjae and the company held the question. Other work would not cause it to vanish while it waited.
At lunch Doun asked to sit with her. The first company dining-room meeting after yesterday's choice made her hesitate briefly over how to address him. He considered a side dish and said this one looked better today. The ordinary remark loosened her uncertainty.
Yesterday's chosen relationship need not supply identical lunch choices, he said.
“Did my face say that?”
“No. I nearly chose yours.”
“Thought you'd read my mind.”
They laughed down at their separate plates. She had not decided what to tell colleagues about yesterday. Neither had he. They wanted to agree who could be told what before answering for each other. Choosing a relationship had not created an obligation to answer every outside question. Today the words known to these two were enough.
He had an assigned afternoon task and needed to leave first. Her wish for more time yesterday did not entitle her to keep him now. Before lifting his dishes he looked at her again; she raised her head. They shared a small smile without a long account, and he left.
She arranged other ordinary work that afternoon. The storehouse distribution acknowledgment confirmed the observation's end. She did not merge its file with Eundam. Small arrows and small notes could resemble one another in the habit of reading them while remaining different people's evidence.
During a break she went to the window. Exterior work had shifted a little since yesterday. One worker gestured and another turned. Glass kept the meaning from her. This time she required no answer from herself for not knowing it. Her drink was still warm when she returned.
At the designated afternoon receipt, the photographer's first explanation arrived. The camera had stood behind the label stand. The forwarding worker's accompanying explanation used its front. Their right sides were opposite.
She wrote the reference face instead of enlarging the black corner again.
“Whose right in the present explanation?”
The photographer's bodily right while holding the camera, came back through the company. It differed from the right of someone facing the stand. That answer moved the loop-like area in her understanding. It did not identify it. She corrected the position and left the question mark.
The current material worker could inspect and explain the same stand tomorrow during a permitted free interval. This was an ordinary check within existing preservation duties, not new entry permission. No schedule sent Seorin to search for the key herself. Yunjae accepted the question within that range.
She retained her first impression as hers: it had looked like a bent loop in the copy. Not a confirmed object name, not the worker's testimony. Erasing a possibly mistaken question in advance might also remove what needed checking. It could remain without borrowing another person's eyes.
Yunjae would attach no new conclusion before the explanation. Seorin lowered her shoulders a little. Unknown did not always mean neglected. She had completed something: separating the note's referent and correcting the reference face. The remaining shadow could wait at its own size.
She checked the recipient of her closing account. Gratitude for the material stayed within the current company route instead of becoming a personal debt to a worker in preservation. Having a reliable way to receive an assigned answer was enough to appreciate.
The present wall clock agreed with her wristwatch when she looked. This photograph offered no reason to add or subtract thirteen minutes. The old western channel's buffer remained a fact of that channel. Applying its number here would conceal the photographer's own time rather than clarify it.
After work she told Doun she wanted separate rest today. He agreed; something at home needed attention anyway. Asked what, he said a bag strap had lengthened and kept catching.
“Bag's making its own case today.”
“Nearest problems are sometimes the last ones noticed.”
At home she put down her own bag and left the exhibition leaflet folded on the table. They need not meet every day to verify yesterday's relationship. Wanting time alone had not become wanting him less. She reported arrival and prepared supper.
Later he replied that the strap was shorter and he had eaten. She sent a little of her own evening, without the photograph or the key inquiry. Knowing part of the past did not grant him every present file.
Before sleep she checked tomorrow's receipt time. The company held the question; the responsible worker would see the actual stand. A picture showed part of a past view, and a copy's shadow showed less still. Tomorrow she could ask about the small black loop from the side where light existed.
