The transport slip had come back blank. That did not make the object disappear.
On the morning of January 16, Seorin reread Mijeong's answer with the company officer. Had receiving the blank paper and last seeing the envelope happened together? Mijeong corrected the sequence. She had received the slip first, then carried the packaging to the waiting shelf. The order in which a memory was told had not been the order of the actions. No scene between them showed somebody else taking it away.
Seorin requested no photograph of the blank slip. They did not know whether that paper still existed. Instead she asked its function. The work transport form had confirmation fields for sender and receiver. The receiving side was empty, Mijeong said, and she had not marked acceptance complete. A description of a blank field need not be made to produce a matching relic today.
The company arranged a short comparison visit to the returns office. Inseo would prepare the envelope-exterior image and relevant transmission records. No permission covered all property on the shelf or other returns. Mijeong had another duty and made no promise to accompany her. Outside, snow mixed with rain as Seorin travelled by the company's arranged route.
This was a working reception office, not Eundam's old management room. Wet shoes crossed the mat behind its glass door. A wall display showed present intake numbers. Seorin compared none of its times with an old photograph. Inseo checked her visit and item before finishing another return and taking her to an office table. From the chair she could not see the corridor shelf. Reading the records did not require opening an unpermitted door to find it.
On the table lay the company's copy and the original classification inquiry's receipt history. Inseo's retained inquiry had one further sentence: the receiving field was blank. It did not say the envelope was empty. Had that sentence fallen away when the title was shortened? He laid out the available transmissions in order.
Beside the table stood a current returns sign. Inseo explained before she photographed anything that it had been changed later. A convenient present sign would make a false marker for the old shelf. He supplied the words actually attached to the inquiry then. Seorin kept her attention on those, leaving today's sign in today's room.
She compared the filenames and print headings. Two sheets Inseo called the same part were different views: an extract of the incoming question screen and a work-closing print. The screen ordered inquiries by receipt. The print grouped them by handling bundle. Higher on the page did not mean moved earlier. She left the sheets beside one another instead of stacking them as a timeline.
Inseo pointed out the actual heading showing the little number was a bundle number. Seorin read only that heading and the permitted line, not masked neighbouring items. The envelope had its own identifying name. The bundle belonged to a transport request. Removal from a bundle could leave the object's name entirely intact.
An arriving employee nearly stood a wet umbrella by the table, then moved it to the door support. Water reached no paper. Seorin made room. Everybody had seen this little move and knew the umbrella's destination. The old envelope still lacked an equivalent witness for its next step. She turned back to the receipt history instead of borrowing today's movement for it.
The first transmission included the missing sentence; the shortened review entry did not. A question about an item's state had come to read like a photograph displaying packaging state. Seorin did not ask whether that was deliberate concealment. Who had shortened what from which material was separate. The present comparison made it clearer that this was no completed return record.
“Can't this office receive it if that field is empty?”
“First we need to know whether we're the receiving place.”
Inseo turned a blank form towards her. A desk could temporarily hold an object without being its final recipient. The example explained a field; it did not replace writing on the old slip. She labelled it as a present form before adding it to the comparison.
The old inquiry's reply read PROCESS AFTER RECEIVING DEPARTMENT CONFIRMED. Inseo had sent it himself. He had chosen neither supplier return nor facility storage. He had asked the sender to establish who should receive the object. The arrow could point right while its next handling remained undecided.
Seorin set that instruction beside Mijeong's account. Blank receiving field returned first; envelope and support carried to Dispatch Hold afterwards. The sequence connected within that distance. There was no next location yet. One photograph could not return the envelope to its origin or put it in somebody else's hands.
Inseo supplied a masked work-closing memo following the inquiry. The receiver remained blank. Beside it a small number identified the transport bundle, not Common 04. The line said EXCLUDED FROM BUNDLE. She read it aloud. Items travelling together did not reveal one another's contents; this particular line said the packaging was not included in that group.
Only part of the next date showed. Other item details had been masked during provision. Seorin asked whether the date belonging to this entry could be supplied. Inseo needed confirmation. He did not peel away another line's mask. He began to recall the date, then stopped: several inquiries had passed that day, and he might be combining bundles.
She recorded that limit. His hesitation did not make the small print false. They needed the envelope's next place rather than a display of confidence. Wheels caught on a threshold beyond the door. Inseo got up without inviting her after him. She stayed at the table. Sound outside a frame could not distinguish the people and objects behind a wall.
When he returned, he said he had been confirming the recipient of today's intake. Seorin did not identify that cart as the old envelope's carrier. The pause at the threshold did stay with her: a place where an item was set down could look like a place where it had been accepted. Between them lay the time somebody needed to read a name and answer.
Near the visit's end, the company authorised the relevant date's provision. Inseo printed the permitted extract. Date and bundle number now showed together. Seorin had two supplied views, with different extents and supply times, rather than an original reconstructed by joining them. They established that exclusion from the bundle followed the photographic inquiry. No uncertain phone clock was needed for that sequence.
Did exclusion mean removal from the shelf? No, Inseo said: removal from the transport list. He had no confirmation from someone who moved the object. Seorin divided her drawn line. A disappearing list entry and a departing envelope were not the same event. The new extract ended with a reconfirmation request number for the receiving department. Inseo could explain sending it, but not that department's judgment.
The company would continue through its existing route. She requested no private telephone number. Outside, most of the snow had become rain. Before opening her umbrella, she reported the completed visit, the distinct extracts, and the next inquiry number. No other return entry was opened to fill the gap. Nothing established that the envelope occupied the shelf now. Visiting an office did not fill that gap.
Doun's message awaited her at the company: his new roster and his available interval. Tomorrow did not overlap hers. She proposed another day; he agreed to that evening. They left the restaurant undecided. She closed the calendar's blank location. Two people could later choose a restaurant. Nobody could fill a historical transport slip's receiving field with a convenient name. The blanks belonged on different screens.
Before duty ended, the company identified the reconfirmation recipient. It was not facility storage but the work-coordination position that had originally requested dispatch. A question about who should receive the packaging had returned to whoever had asked for it to be sent.
The first answer arrived on January 17. The request had concerned packaging used for work, not return of the original key. Seorin asked for the document identifying what was requested then. Contents still lay outside this assignment. The copy carried Common 04 and SEPARATE RECEIPT, words that might request an action without reporting its completion. In the receiving field, where the old form had been blank, this copy held no name. It held the starting time of the next shift.
