One pouch cord was shorter. The short end had no knot.
On the morning of R+142, Darae examined a small cloth pouch at ordinary intake in the rotating ring. The communal tool-box recipient had brought a separate inquiry. It had not been kept with yesterday's cover. Matching edge embroidery suggested asking the same repair worker, nothing more.
In what condition had it arrived? Empty, during sorting of a communal material basket. There was no personal name. Similar embroidery differed in size and fold direction. Darae did not use similar as an intake identification of the same object.
Garam checked the current cloth and cord. The short end looked finished rather than broken, though that did not establish its original length. Darae did not pull the two cords even. Preserving present condition came before making the pouch close neatly.
Viewing the permitted face, the maker recognized one of a batch. Several pouches carried the mark; who used each was not entirely known. Yesterday's cover-use answer could not simply enter today's record. Knowing one's work did not require memorizing every user's name.
The maker remembered a request to shorten one cord, but needed more to identify this pouch. The requester had wanted to hold it with one hand and draw it closed with the long cord. Darae enlarged that memory into no disability or injury story. The confirmed recollection concerned a way of using it.
“I thought short meant wrong,” the receiving worker said.
First they should ask whether equal lengths belonged to this object's purpose, Garam replied. Making both even might have erased the request's trace. But Darae had not met the requester. Calling an act consideration did not authorize inventing the person's condition or reasons.
A limited inquiry travelled through Haeseong's existing community route: maker's mark, pouch size and current receiving history first. Nobody publicly solicited a user's personal circumstances. The relevant worker could ask an adult who might know individual ownership. Her counter need not gather everybody's name.
Before lunch an adult identified the requested shortening. No exterior name, but a little triangle inside a fold. There was no need to show contents. The person permitted comparison of that inner fold in the presently empty object. Darae read the description to Garam.
A triangle appeared inside. A different-coloured line beneath it was unfamiliar to the claimant, who did not immediately take it because the triangle matched. Darae felt her own wish for a happy answer. The other line's origin could remain a separate question.
Did it resemble a name? Garam could read no lettering, and distinguished it from stitching. The claimant had once lent the pouch for sorting at the communal repair place. Different-coloured paper bands had been inserted. Whether pigment had transferred then remained unknown.
Darae proposed no cleaning experiment. The cause of cloth colouring required more than their assumption. The maker described the shortened side's finishing thread and inward fold. The actual pouch retained a matching turn inside. Garam showed the presently visible part again through permitted contact.
Triangle direction and holding side both matched the claimant's account. Ownership could be confirmed while the other colour's origin remained unknown. Darae imposed no condition that every blemish be explained before return. Grounds sufficient for identification could coexist with an unresolved detail.
Cleaning could be chosen later. Today the person wanted the present condition. Function was separately checked within agreed handling: Garam opened and closed it empty without force. Its actual future use and contents remained the owner's choice under current conditions.
The owner offered a feasible collection time. Until then Darae kept it separately identified, outside yesterday's communal-cover compartment, with its present empty condition and the remaining handover clearly recorded for the people receiving it. The same maker could produce a communal object and one returning privately today. Sodam changed the temporary support label and repeated the relevant count. Four tags stayed apart from this inquiry.
One larger clothing pocket might suit her, Sodam said. What would she put in which side? Objects seemed to emerge more often from the small pocket even now. Perhaps that concerned search order rather than size, Darae replied. Only jokes about their own belongings escaped the counter.
During a short lunch interval Darae asked whether yesterday's borrowed shoulder was all right. Mujin said it was still his shoulder. She had not asked ownership, she replied. It was comfortable, he answered properly. She liked the second short sentence: a joke could still be followed by the actual answer.
Would she consider their next meal at his home? He added that he did not mean assigning her preparation. She needed time to think. She wanted greater closeness, but entering each other's homes differed from meeting in shared places. He understood. No schedule required today's decision.
She did not invent a refusal and explain it ahead of herself. Curiosity and not yet choosing could remain together. She was glad he had asked. He was glad he had said it. After saying she would eat and return to work, she set down the terminal. Her heart beat a little fast.
The owner arrived that afternoon and took the short side near the support. Slowly pulling the long cord gathered the opening; releasing it eased the fold. Only after seeing the actual hand did Darae ask why the short end lacked a knot. A thick part against the fingers had been uncomfortable, the owner said.
That made no universal best design. This pouch suited this person. A hand smoothed the short side and checked the triangle. The other line would stay. Its exact origin remained unknown, but the currently needed surface was usable. Darae received that choice with the return acknowledgment.
Personal things would go inside after the owner went home. There was no need to exhibit contents at the counter. Garam repeated his condition-check limits; Sodam cleared the support after actual receipt. A closed pouch opening did not close an intake before its recipient's answer arrived.
The owner placed it in a little communal carrying basket, first explaining that the basket was temporarily borrowed. Darae did not merge today's private return with the basket's future one. Its current manager had not yet acknowledged receiving it back.
The maker received the relevant result: remembering the one-sided adjustment had assisted identification. The other-coloured line's cause remained unknown to the maker too. Darae retained that explanation. A good outcome need not erase what nobody knew.
Had the map owner and pouch owner heard each other's answers? Haeseong asked. Each had received what their own object needed, she said. Sharing a community route required no mutual disclosure of all private belongings. He requested only the presently relevant receipt result. His slow words made today's paper a little thinner.
Ordinary intakes occupied the remaining shift. Locating objects and recording real receipt did not acquire new story titles every time. Each still needed to reach somewhere a person could call it theirs. Before clearing the counter she and Sodam compared custody counts. Today's small completions did not take one another's spaces.
Eating alone after work, she reconsidered Mujin's question. Visiting his home also meant choosing her return. She needed to be able to say if she could not stay long. This was understanding the meeting she wanted, not an accusation against him. She drew no happy ending for an evening that did not exist yet.
At home she asked about preparing food together, a possible duration including clearing away, and finishing whenever either wanted rest. He gave his available time. They could cook together or buy food if preparation proved difficult. She appreciated that he did not call his doorway the inevitable next step.
Instead of choosing today, she proposed the next meal in the shared dining room. A home meeting could be discussed afterward. He agreed. She did not apologize as though delaying broke a promise. A choice available next time remained available now.
Yesterday had been good, she told him. He agreed. A different choice today did not erase leaning against his shoulder. She began to draw a bowl, then set down the pen. Explaining a feeling did not always require a fresh picture. Today the words had reached their place.
Next shift's notice concerned the empty communal basket. While returning it, the pouch recipient had noticed a different number inside its handle and wanted to check it was the borrowed basket. Today similar embroidery had not become a name. Tomorrow the actual basket would show which part its number described.
