The returned map now folded alone.
On the morning of R+140, Darae first received acknowledgment for yesterday's two papers. The book owner tucked the flowerpot map inside the book. The adult lender received the dotted sheet. They arrived separately at suitable times. Having drawn the same paths did not oblige them to arrive together.
Before folding the second map, its owner pointed at the dot. Beside it, small writing said wind door. A copied old guide supplied for comparison called the same apparent position circulation inspection door. Before accepting them as one door, Darae asked when this map's layout belonged.
Before the communal shelves moved in Sai's main body. The exact date was not remembered. The guide might be later. Perhaps a door had changed; perhaps one door had carried different names. Darae did not write that today's map had supplied a date.
Cool air had come when the wind door opened, its owner remembered, tapping the drawn door and indicating its old height. Darae did not turn that sensation into proof of open space beyond. Station air could move from an adjoining compartment. Coolness alone established no pressure boundary.
Seo could receive the relevant inquiry now. Darae passed the permitted faces and the owner's explanation. She sought no current route approval for a personal old map. Could retained material distinguish the facility type then and explain the different names?
Had inspection panels and passage doors been drawn differently? Seo asked. No: the owner had drawn needed places, with long passages and rectangular shelves, but used the same rectangles for unopened doors. It was a record of lived experience, not an engineering diagram.
“Very conscientious rectangles,” Darae said.
Rectangles were about all the owner could draw. Then they should not force the equipment to fit them, Seo replied. Sodam added that every cell in her work table was rectangular too. After the laughter, Seo explained who would check which retained material. The joke completed no comparison.
Could the owner take the dotted map home meanwhile? Its return was already acknowledged. Today's comparison could use the permitted copy. Keeping the original here was no obligation. The owner put it in personal protection and would receive further explanation through the established route. Ownership could be settled while a question remained.
Seo's first answer included circulation-system markings for the relevant old layout. Staff were still checking which changes the record reflected. Darae did not trace connecting lines beyond his explanation. Within its scope, there had been an equipment inspection cover beside the passage, not a face registered for people to pass through.
The owner had never seen anyone enter it either. Another memory concerned someone asking that a communal shelf be moved away because it blocked the wind. The inspection-door name evoked that scene, but whether it belonged to the same day as the cool air was uncertain.
Darae kept the memories separate. Both airflow and maintenance access could require clear space, Seo explained. Remembering one did not establish the other. They needed the retained account of why the old layout had changed. A personal sketch alone could not judge equipment condition.
Haeseong could ask an adult who had helped move the shelf. Darae made clear that nobody needed to reenter a dangerous compartment to demonstrate it. They were receiving retained explanation and already held memories. This was no request to open a present door to confirm a former path.
The participant replied: the shelf moved after an inspection worker requested space. Wind door had been the residents' name. A small personal sorting note from then said clear circulation cover front. It was a private note, not an official equipment work sheet.
Map, copied guide and private note now showed three terms side by side. There were grounds for saying people had used different names for living space beside the same equipment. This did not establish performance or every historical alteration. Darae returned that answer with Seo's rechecked location limits.
Did it mean the owner's road was wrong? It showed the shelf position remembered then. Reading the inspection cover as a passage door could change its purpose. Future sharing needed the explanation that this was no present route guidance. The owner wanted to add that in personal words beside the map.
The original was theirs to alter, Darae said. The depot would not correct it into an official plan. The owner would add a current explanation without erasing old lettering. What changed and what remained were personal choices. Receiving that answer allowed Darae to finish her part of the comparison.
At lunch Mujin said he would bring water on their walk. So would she. Was two bottles excessive preparation? Each could take responsibility for that much mass, she said. Professional fuel calculations need not enter a personal stroll; her bag would still rest on her own shoulder.
The walk was tomorrow after work. For a moment she wondered if keeping her promise of no drawing meant removing even blank paper from her bag. She left it. Not taking it out would suffice. Rest did not need a new inspection checklist. She finished eating and returned her cup.
Jingyeong briefly came to the counter that afternoon, checking the receipt scope of her supplement for the existing audit comparison. Darae answered precisely which relevant grounds her own work had passed onward. She offered no metaphor about today's inspection door. The registrar needed accurate receipt more than comfort filling a gap.
Parts still required explanation in Jingyeong's own name. Darae acknowledged hearing that. The registrar had announced no new judgment today. A heavy face did not permit Darae to infer one. They could stand briefly in the same passage and return to separate work.
Seo's final check concerned applicability. The retained record face matched the equipment position in the resident's note, but no complete later alteration history had been received today. Darae separated her answerable question from the larger equipment inquiry. A limited answer fitted the explanation to accompany an old personal map.
She erased the first draft of that explanation. It had called the map's door name wrong. Its owner had not falsified a way; names from different uses had met. She wrote the residents' nickname and the retained equipment term separately. Removing the large word wrong made the actual difference clearer.
Seo agreed that this matched his check. If someone asked about the air's actual condition then, the current material alone could not answer. She retained that limit. Knowing a cover's position must not sound like knowing every system beyond it; someone tomorrow might otherwise skip another necessary check.
The sorting note's owner also received the actual use made of that explanation. Retaining the statement of moving a shelf was correct, they replied, relieved it had not become a guarantee of repair performance. Darae promised no impossible prevention of every future misreading. She could show the actual words of the present supplement.
Why did the intake remain open after both maps went back? Sodam asked. Original returns were complete; receipt of the name comparison was pending. Had the object gone home first, with words following? Today, yes. Words could lose their way too. Darae waited for an arrival answer.
It came through Haeseong's route. The owner had received the distinction between personal nickname and official marking, and would not use the old map as a current passage route. Keeping an old drawing as personal paper had been the wish all along. Darae confirmed completion within that wish.
Clearing the counter, she compared the four remaining tags with Sodam. Two returned maps had changed none of that bundle. One string lay under another tag. Instead of pulling it, Sodam emptied a support. Even thin objects needed space to be distinguished.
That evening Mujin reported spilling a little water on his desk while checking his bottle for leaks. Had the papers escaped? The sleeve drawing had been elsewhere. Darae smiled at herself for first asking where the drawing stood. He had not rescued only the picture; he had wiped his desk too.
She would not inspect his bottle on tomorrow's walk. If he asked her to, would she look? Then she could. They ended the joke without driving it farther. Being in separate homes tonight was no failed meeting. Darae washed and dried her own bottle.
Next shift's notice carried an inquiry about a small cloth cover from the shelf beside the inspection cover whose name they had clarified. Embroidery at its edge might be a personal name mark or a communal object label. Its presenter first said it had not been used to block the wind. Darae assigned no purpose from that alone.
Today's door name could not explain tomorrow's cloth. Having lain where air passed differed from having blocked it. She prepared to receive the actual cloth's present handling condition first. After the papers' road ended, another folded object beside it was getting its turn.
