There were two blue dots and one receiving place.
On R+130, Darae saw the shallow ceramic plate at the communal kitchen's designated return table. The assigned fragile-item handler had brought it in its protection, and Miwon received it. Darae was present only for the agreed identification assistance.
The smell of service lingered without steam: dry cloth and faint cleaning solution. In the ring's weak simulated gravity the plate inclined towards the floor. That did not make careless handling wise. Darae put her own bag at the designated low place.
The visitor who had called the plate personal could come today. Before then, Miwon could demonstrate how it entered communal return. Darae suggested beginning with what they could check without the visitor. Waiting for someone was no reason to finish their object's story first.
The table had two approaches. From inside the dining space, COMMUNAL DISH RETURN was large and clear. From the corridor its lettering turned edge-on. A smaller arrow marked PERSONAL STORAGE INQUIRIES and pointed towards the table's end. Different tasks were received at one place.
Miwon said communal returns went on the right and personal inquiries on the left.
“Whose right?”
Miwon pointed towards their own chest and stopped. The receiver's right was the approaching visitor's left. Yesterday's instruction might have been given that way too. Today's arrangement could not establish precisely where yesterday's hand had pointed. The other person on duty would answer after their shift.
They could test the present mismatch. Darae requested an empty ordinary transport support on the visitor's side. They did not experiment with the real plate. Miwon approached from the corridor. Darae gave the usual left-side instruction. Miwon put the support at their own left, before communal protection.
“Someone can follow the directions correctly and put it in the wrong place.”
Under this explanation, yes. Should the whole table move? Darae could not approve kitchen circulation or fittings. They first recorded the two approaches for the operating worker to consider.
At the office Sodam received the field portion. Had they found the plate's owner? Not yet, Darae said. They were examining the receiving place. Ownership and the route into the wrong protection remained separate.
Miwon turned the authorised support to show the base. Beside the dots stood a scratch. Another identifying mark? It could be ordinary wear until the owner explained it. Every dot and scratch did not need to become a private code.
The adult visitor, Jian, arrived a little late. Miwon explained identification and today's intake scope. Darae did not repeat the name loudly for every diner. Jian began by saying yesterday's instruction still failed to show where the plate should have gone.
Jian had said it was personal and put it on the left. The receiving person asked for it farther inside, so Jian pushed it forward. Then it moved into a container whose interior could not be seen. The account stopped at the last movement Jian had witnessed, without inventing what happened inside.
Why bring it here? A storage label had fallen off the base. Jian wanted to ask how to attach it again. This was a clean personal plate brought for a marking inquiry, rather than a plate after a meal.
Miwon examined the line they had written: dirty dish, awaiting washing. They had inferred that from a photograph of the scratch. Whether it had actually been washed required the handling worker's answer. Miwon corrected the inference first. That was a fact they could repair before deciding ownership.
Had someone else's food been served on it? Jian asked. Darae described the known route: communal protection, recognition of the personal inquiry, transfer to the office, and the received hold against further service. Earlier washing and handling had now been put to the responsible worker.
The reply came through the nearby designated counter. Protection containing the plate had stopped before washing; the personal-property inquiry had caused its separate removal. The handling record matched that account. Only then did Darae tell Jian it had not been washed.
Relieved, Jian still wanted to inspect it. The handler presented it on the permitted face. After washing hands, Jian examined the edge. The small scratch between the dots was old.
The dots were a family mark, Jian began, then stopped. Darae left the rest unasked. Use and custody history could distinguish the object now. Explaining every private meaning of a mark was no condition for receiving it.
“They said it needed a name. I thought dots instead weren't allowed.”
Miwon explained that the instruction concerned distinguishing personal stored dishes, not displaying a full personal name. How that instruction reached users still belonged in the kitchen's current guidance. Darae added no new rule on her own authority.
The operating worker came and looked from both sides. Daily work from inside had left the corridor sign unread. Personal inquiries could use a separate small support. Verbal directions would name fixed references, the wall side and passage side. The worker would check circulation space under their own responsibility.
Darae did not rearrange the equipment. The worker chose the permitted position; Miwon moved it. They watched the real receiving motion to check that the plate surface did not overlap the route for other dishes. Jian waited while the personal plate remained protected.
Darae saw Jian's fingers withdraw from the support's edge. Someone who had seemed reluctant to stop holding the object could now watch another person's agreed movement. She did not explain that small change on Jian's behalf.
With an empty support, the second attempt differed. From the corridor Miwon could see both PERSONAL INQUIRIES and the separate place. The inside receiver could describe that place using the same reference. Two successful approaches today promised no universal freedom from confusion. They did establish that this instruction had just worked.
Jian would ask the personal storage worker tomorrow about the new label. Old traces were not stripped away here. The plate's return was completed, with permission to carry it in the borrowed protection. Darae arranged the protection's own return separately from receipt of the plate.
After Jian left, the empty support remained. They had spent a long time on a plate containing no food today, Miwon said. Darae intended to use a bowl of her own later. The lunch changeover was arranged already. One return had not stopped the kitchen.
On her way back she glanced at a corridor arrow. Approach could alter what it appeared to indicate. She kept Jingyeong's explanation distinct from this arrangement error. Having someone to ask, and choosing to pass a known need for checking onward, remained their own responsibilities.
The audit route confirmed receipt of Jingyeong's supplement by one relevant party. Darae accepted that one receipt without erasing the others still outstanding. There was no need to hurry Jingyeong privately about tomorrow's progress.
At lunch Sodam asked what the plate's dots meant. Darae had heard only what identification required. Sodam was curious, but people did not demand a meaning from her lunch plate either. When she began turning her own bowl to see its base, Darae told her to eat first.
They laughed. Some of Darae's tension lowered. The moment when both people put an empty support in the same place remained longer in her mind than the final return itself. She could not choose and record the instant somebody's feelings eased. She could use a helpful receiving motion in her own future directions.
Afternoon intakes continued. Sodam wondered whether private returns and communal objects ever reached the same support at their office. Darae did not begin an inspection programme merely because another kitchen had needed a change. She asked the current worker about actual confusing inquiries here.
The signs were visible from both approaches; personal intake was distinguished verbally first. Today brought no new fact requiring an alteration. Sodam would receive the current visitor's cord, then. Darae nodded. Finding one useful answer did not mean moving every table.
After work Mujin sent a possible time for food together: a short meeting after their agreed shifts on R+132. Darae checked her own assignment and could come. Tomorrow they could choose the dining place and entrance from its current operation. An available evening was not yet a booked table.
She sent only a brief personal note that the plate had returned to its owner. Would she fill tomorrow's dishes with drawings? Mujin asked.
“I'd rather choose dishes for eating today.”
“Not my profession either. I'll gladly help with the side that holds food.”
At home she washed her own bowl and set it somewhere dry. There were no special dots underneath. She almost made a mark with a finger, then stopped. It was not mixed with another person's bowls here. Without a name it had still held her supper.
Before sleep, a question arrived through Jian's existing return route. A thin cloth had remained in the borrowed protection after the plate came out. It did not belong to Jian. Whether the kitchen had inserted it while preparing the protection remained unanswered. Darae did not close the story again from its colour. The plate was home. The order of another object's arrival beneath it still needed asking.
