In the axial section, an empty net could leave before a hand did.
On the morning of R+127, Darae checked her own restraint before the designated receiving rail. The familiar pressure beneath her feet had faded along the journey from the ring. Lowering a toe did not keep her here. She closed her water bottle, put it in personal protection and held the indicated handhold.
The folded net lay inside assigned protection. It carried ordinary tool boxes, not people or exterior flight equipment. The return list named one net and two spare straps. The preliminary account said three strap lengths were visible.
How had Miwon counted them? From the folded exterior, the transport worker explained. Three long sections showed; nothing had been fully spread. Darae corrected her own note, which had already made them three separately received straps.
Sodam accompanied her to the permitted receiving position. A finger started towards the protection and stopped. Touching the net might move an end hidden on the other side. Darae asked for the unfolding place to be established first. Garam, the designated handler, held the current handling role.
Thin things looked easy, Garam said, but a folded end could follow later than expected. The spreading surface and restraints were already assigned. Only one side of the protection opened; the other end remained held. Darae watched hands making a place for the object before taking it out.
Miwon indicated the three visible sections. Grey, another grey, then a shorter black length crossing the middle. An image had made their widths seem equal. Spread on the working surface, the black one looked narrower.
“Colour can't finish the count,” Miwon said.
“No need to pretend we haven't seen it either.”
The visible difference could guide their next question. Garam traced where the first grey length ended. It separated completely as a spare and went into its designated restraint. The other grey strap came out separately too.
The black section had appeared to end in the middle of the folded net. Lifting it gently brought that supposed end round behind. Sodam thought it attached to the net. Darae asked which part was actually attached. Connected and caught beneath another thing were different accounts.
Garam unfolded the next permitted section without pulling harder. The black strap's far end appeared at an existing corner loop. It was a component for securing excess net when folded for storage, not a third spare intended to detach. They had found part of the net, not newly arrived cargo.
Darae did not erase the number three. Two spare straps in the list and three visible lengths in the preliminary view could both be correct under different counts. Miwon reread the message: it had not said three spares, but its recipient could readily hear that.
The transport worker clarified the preliminary account through the responsible route. Garam compared the component description with the real connection. All three people seeing one black section did not decide whether it remained fit for use. The handler continued the required management checks.
Identification and the receiving hands were Darae's portion. She did not reach out to test strength because the connection had become visible. Within Garam's restraints, the net folded again, showing the black strap travelling round it. The part that had looked short proved longer once its folds opened.
Then a grey spare's end lifted slightly from the holding surface. Sodam's shoulder moved as if to push towards it. Garam caught it from the nearer restraint and secured it again. Nothing flew away; the work paused.
Darae noticed her breath shorten. No rescue had occurred. Still, a moving object could make her eyes lead her body. She checked the handhold and did not kick her feet towards anything. They waited for Garam to say work could resume.
Sodam had moved too quickly; Miwon's hands had moved too. Reassuring one another must not skip why that end had lifted. The handler changed its temporary holding arrangement and checked the next actual movement. They did not spread the whole net for three people to grip at once. Well-meant pulls in different directions would still produce different forces.
More hands did not automatically mean better protection. Darae stayed in her position and read the object's distinctions from there. It was a useful place for a clerk even when the most visible work belonged to somebody else's fingers.
The black folding strap's explanation appeared below the component diagram, away from the spare count. Miwon had counted two spares while preparing the return, treating the folded net as a single thing. On intake, three exposed lengths had reached the eye first. Asking only who got a number wrong could not finish that difference.
“Need to know something about a net to count one,” Sodam said.
“But returning it shouldn't require memorising every loop's name.”
Miwon would ask whether the necessary component picture could accompany this net's return guidance. No new universal catalogue was proposed. This was one question about seeing detachable spares and attached components together. Catalog received the approved distinctions. Software that had not seen the fold would not be credited with discovering the loop.
During a pause Darae looked through the window. Part of the rotating structure slowly presented another angle. A putting-down gesture did not end here as it did beside a floor. Before letting go, a hand needed to know where an object would be held.
She remembered freeing her own bag cord at home. Familiarity with the cord did not make every place familiar. Sodam remarked that the support seemed to be working today too.
“Always was. We thought to thank it today.”
Once the management check ended, Garam confirmed receipt of one net and two spares. The black folding strap remained within the net's components. Miwon read the handover; the designated recipient matched the actual received set. Nobody registered a third spare merely because three lengths had once shown.
Before closing protection, the handler checked a permitted fold that left the black connection readable. Darae had not requested a prettier shape. The next hands needed a distinction they could actually see, within the net's use conditions.
“No extra object to return after all,” Sodam said, almost disappointed.
“Something that belongs attached can stay attached.”
Every intake need not produce a new owner. Today they had finished without dividing one object wrongly.
Before leaving the rail she checked her belongings: bottle inside its protection, terminal on its own line. She acknowledged the end of the receiving work to Garam and followed the guided movement sequence. Where floor pressure seemed to return, she did not hurry into a stride before her body was ready.
At lunch in the ring, she watched her cup settle on the table. It stayed. Sodam appreciated food not approaching from above.
“We never opened lunch in the axial section. Don't accuse the food.”
They laughed. Darae relaxed her shoulders before taking her spoon. The sense of returning to one place followed a little slower than the objects. Rest did not feel like a flaw in the completed work.
That afternoon, Miwon confirmed the managing worker had accepted the request to show the component drawing beside the return guidance. Implementation belonged to that worker's next step. Darae recorded no completed change where only receipt existed. Today's physical intake closed separately.
Jingyeong's audit-route notice arrived too. The next answering desk remained the same; there was no new conclusion. Unfolding a net did not join historical responsibilities for them. No reason had arisen to contact Maru privately. All twenty-three chosen housing arrivals remained complete. Faulty 7-B remained a defective carbon-dioxide-removal cartridge, not a useful new part.
After work she read Mujin's personal reply. Tomorrow's agreed meeting time still suited him. He wanted to look at their bodies after work and begin with a short level route. She wanted that too. Crossing between station sections had left her tired today.
They could sit instead of walking, he said.
“If I arrive and take no steps, have I changed our promise?”
“Made it with a person. Not walking legs.”
She stayed with the sentence for a little while before answering. Seeing him came first for her too. If a short walk suited tomorrow, she would like it. Otherwise she wanted to sit with water. More than one route inside the same agreement did not look like a hole through which to escape it.
At home she took out a bowl and caught herself beginning to count features on every object. Fortunate it had no handle, she thought, laughing alone. Supper was ordinary and warm. Having somewhere to set it down felt slightly different.
She chose comfortable clothes before sleep and left work restraints out of the personal bag. Tomorrow she was not going to receive anybody's cargo. Mujin's last message said they could look at each other before choosing the route. The net's black strap could do its work holding a folded object. Their agreement could remain connected without tying both bodies in one direction.
