Not everything that looked like a loop was a loop.
On the morning of day one hundred and four after temporary handover, Darae compared Yewon's description with the remaining glove's exterior record. It had one original cuff loop. The folded cloth end beside it had not yet been identified. Yesterday's return of Jian's right glove did not complete this object's checks by subtraction. Sodam received the question with the assigned handler.
Yewon had used pale thread to reattach her cuff loop. The repair lay inside the opening, where cloth had been folded and stitched. She permitted the handler to view that small area and compare its condition. This was no request to reverse the entire glove or cut a thread. Darae left the precise scope at the bench. They were returning a mended object, not accepting a new repair.
With the protection secured, the handler supported the allowed cuff surface. The cloth end was not an extra tied cord. It was part of the folded seam allowance: an edge turned inward for stitching, with a little excess projecting beside the loop. Nobody pulled to discover whether it might come away. Its visible connection and stitching answered the present question.
The short pale-thread repair also lay where Yewon had described. Through the agreed route, she confirmed that the reported condition matched. Personal intake details, history, exterior features and today's permitted comparison connected. Darae did not enter correct because it was the only glove left. There had been a new check of this person's actual object. No inner name or private writing was needed.
“If there's no second loop, have we lost something else to return?” Sodam asked.
“There was one glove from the beginning.”
Sodam nodded and improved the condition description. An imprecise exterior record could be corrected without increasing the object count. Catalog received no new missing-cord case. It held the one object people had checked.
Yewon could not attend today's collection time. Darae did not make her start the return inquiry over. The existing route allowed a request for a designated adult collector. She chose a workshop carrier. Working at the same workshop would not, by itself, give that person collection authority.
Sodam matched the collector's identity, authority for this one object, carrying protection and route. Jian's glove had already been returned and formed no part of it. Yewon confirmed who could receive the present glove and protection. Darae changed the heading from one pair to one right glove. A short correction was quicker than explaining an absent left hand to the next desk.
The carrier was Ha Jeongmin, an adult. At the handover position, current authority was checked before the agreed protection was received. Darae did not record Jeongmin as the representative for every workshop object. Today's scope was one glove for one designated recipient. There was no need to open the protection and try the glove on. Its condition had been checked through the proper route.
Jeongmin's small transport case suited the axial section's restraints. The handler secured the glove's carrying protection in its assigned position inside. Even on the way toward the rotating ring, it would not travel with the lid open and the cloth held in a fist. A small mass did not lose its motion simply because it was soft. Loose fabric could enter the spaces between other objects and acquire a second search.
After receiving it, Jeongmin described the unit back: one right glove and its present carrying protection. Yewon's receipt was still ahead. Darae entered the departure state and divided the follow-up with Sodam. When one person left the desk, the next answer needed somewhere to arrive. She would not keep custody of the question through her private messages.
The bench emptied after the case left. The storage worker collected the remaining office protection. The gloves' original thin carriers belonged to the specified recovery arrangement; they were not extra personal gifts. Darae passed their numbers to the worker responsible for reuse. Nobody would leave one customer's name label on a carrier and place the next person's object beneath it.
How could they reduce the original heading mistake, Sodam asked? Darae suggested preserving count and hand direction wherever they mattered, rather than adding a long warning to every glove. Objects in the same container could still be separate people's units. Today's customers would not become example photographs for tomorrow's users. The useful general question did not need their pictures or names attached.
After lunch handover, Yewon's receipt came. She had received one protected glove from Jeongmin at the workshop and confirmed its repair and condition. Darae kept that reported receipt apart from the time Jeongmin left the office. Two people's right-hand objects had reached their respective owners. No left glove had materialized on the storage shelf.
Yewon said the words one pair had made her think she herself had brought the wrong thing. Darae acknowledged that the office summary had enlarged the misunderstanding. The correction did not depend on Yewon having another glove to bring next time. Today's actual units had gone back correctly; this inquiry could close now. Sodam received the answer and updated completion.
Darae looked once more at the first exterior photograph. The same two thumbs still pointed the same way. The image had not been wrong. A short heading beneath it had turned their eyes toward an opposite hand. She did not alter the picture to make the gloves face different directions. Original record and present explanation together showed what had been misread.
Ordinary returns continued that afternoon. Darae did not make each inquiry longer by recalling both thumbs. One person's simple storage pouch had matching authority and condition and was returned briefly. Today's exception need not become a reason to demand more proof from everyone else. Where the necessary checks matched, work could end.
Before duty finished, Mujin privately asked whether they might sit briefly in the communal dining room at a quiet time on their next day off. Darae checked her assignment and named an available day. They made the arrangement only after his schedule matched. The place was publicly usable. Neither asked for a restricted work window or special access to equipment.
Could she bring the bowl she had drawn alone? He wanted to see it. She already knew that meant no request to receive the paper as a gift; he need not recite a long declaration about ownership. This time, drawing and meeting had a chosen place in their days. The actual meeting was still two days away.
Back in her room, Darae took out the protected sheet. Its bowl remained somewhat uncertain about which way was up. She almost picked up a pencil to make it look more like something Mujin might admire, then put the pencil down. She wanted to show the drawing that had first made her laugh alone. Improving its protection for viewing and turning the picture into another picture were different tasks.
The sheet went back into her personal protection. Her bent name tag stayed in its other bag compartment. The two-handled cup drawing she had given Mujin had not returned to her room. Shared window and private bowl remained separate sheets. Darae closed the bag and rested. A day did not require taking out every possession before it could end.
On the next shift, day one hundred and five, an inquiry came from an ordinary logistics desk, rather than the Safety Office. An empty transport frame's measured mass did not agree with the stated empty-frame reference. There was no life-support failure or external-docking alarm. The frame was secured at its measuring position and movement had stopped. Darae read a new object's new question, without reopening the gloves.
Sodam asked why the frame inquiry had reached lost-and-found. A temporary office transport label remained on its return route. After the carried property was handed over, it had been described as an empty frame. The current handler was unsure whether bottom supports remained. First they needed to know whether the reference described the same configuration. Extra mass was not yet concealed cargo.
The frame was not an office intake object. Logistics retained its ownership and custody route. Darae had been asked about her office's temporary label history; she could not remotely open somebody else's physical equipment from her terminal. Catalog had acquired no new sensor. It could show which intake the label number had served.
That number connected to one transport leg for ordinary communal property already delivered. There was no reason to reverse the residents' completed housing handovers or open original evidence storage. Darae placed the present recovery sheet beside the configuration description. A detail line included two bottom supports. The empty-frame reference heading mentioned neither.
The measurement worker explained that the reading came through the axial mass-measurement system. They had not simply compared it with the force shown by a floor scale in the rotating ring. Darae left questions about common units, configuration and method. Her sense of heaviness could not replace the measurement. Nobody needed a demonstration of pushing the frame by hand.
Before any item was removed, Sodam asked whether the present restraints were maintained. The worker confirmed that frame and remaining supports were secured. Undoing every strap to explain a discrepancy could create another movement problem. Darae read the history while the stop and the next handler's responsibility remained in place.
Nor could they simply insert the mass of two supports into the difference. The measurement worker still had to confirm their actual presence and the reference configuration. Darae returned those questions to logistics. She could match the office label with its delivered unit. Frame safety and instrument assessment belonged to their assigned workers.
Near the end of the morning, a new exterior view arrived. Both listed supports were still inside. At one corner, though, a small restraint in another colour was visible. It did not belong to the recovery sheet's basic configuration. Before counting the supports again, Darae asked what that strap held. Beneath the name empty frame, something had really remained.
