Even an unwanted object could have a part that must come home.
On the morning of day ninety-eight after temporary handover, Darae opened the small storage box's exterior record. Intake contained one box and outer protection. No name tag was on the box itself. The claimant wanted the box handled instead of returned, but did want the little exterior plate back. Those words alone could enact neither choice.
Sodam connected the receiving desk with the original finding account. The adult claimant, Kang Yeowon, had described losing a personal box at a communal workshop and given its appearance. Final authority and connection to the item still needed checking. A matching name did not make Darae open the disposal field first.
“Not taking it back isn't the same as asking us to throw it away,” Sodam said.
“Let's receive the choice and the authority to make it separately.”
First establish whether this claimant could decide about this property. Catalog showed only the intake units people had entered. It was no software for sorting an owner's mind.
The box occupied a secured workbench near the axial cargo ring. Darae fixed her feet and began with the protection record. Smallness did not remove mass; loosen the box, and that mass could drift. They could change the viewed face only after the responsible worker accepted its restraint condition.
There was no permission to open it today. Darae needed no imagined paper or apparatus inside. Two corners, a handle and a little attached colour strip partly matched Yeowon's description. Common features belonged apart from details that could connect an object to original records.
Yeowon described an old repair beside the handle. This was no request to scratch it afresh. A little patch was visible within permitted exterior observation. The workshop's existing outward record and actual finding place could also be compared through the agreed route. A separate worker took that comparison.
“What shape was the plate?” Darae asked.
A narrow plate engraved with a name, Yeowon said, with two holes at its ends. Had it been fixed directly to the box? Her answer paused. It had been visible outside when she carried the box, but at the end the protection was on. One outside had contained two meanings.
Sodam separated the box exterior from the protection exterior. Nothing yet established the plate as a fixed box component. Darae withdrew the hand that had imagined simply detaching it for return. She could not detach something without knowing from where. First count what had actually arrived again.
The finder's record described placing the box in protection and passing it to designated custody. It claimed no separate view of contents or tag. A folded flap obscured one face of the protection. They did not pull it wide merely to remove the blind spot. Present ownership and handling scope came first.
There was also an account that the outer protection might be communal workshop loan equipment. It could not share one owner's disposal route with Yeowon's personal box. Sodam asked the designated workshop worker about its features and loan connection. Somebody calling an object communal did not authorize anyone to open it. They could wait for the actual responsible answer.
Meanwhile, Sodam handled an ordinary return within her own assignment. Darae did not issue permission for every step. Her experienced colleague knew the scope and exceptions. Darae continued the box comparison. If one person stopped at every intake signal, the office would only grow slower.
Must Yeowon come now? Darae explained that the exterior connection could be received first. If later confirmation or return required attendance, she could choose an available time. She need not stand at intake while the item itself was unresolved. Yeowon chose a contact interval that fitted her day.
The office did not begin by demanding why she wanted only the name tag. No bereavement or departure from work had been established. Wanting fewer possessions was enough for the inquiry. Protection and authority questions did not require access to every private reason.
The assigned comparison worker sent the box connection. Permitted parts of the workshop outward record, Yeowon's personal property record and specific exterior traces matched. Final handover confirmation remained before treatment, but her present authority to request action on this item was established. This was not another person's box in the same location.
Darae asked again what Yeowon chose. She did not want the box returned. She had not selected disposal method or the responsible worker's conditions. First she wanted to locate the plate and learn whether it could be separated, then choose treatment of the rest. They could accept that order.
Sodam amended the first short heading, box disposal. This was an inquiry to choose separate treatment after tag identification. Yeowon said it fitted her words better. One heading no longer sent the box to a destination in advance. No immediate transfer into disposal stock began.
While protection authority was pending, the box stayed on the same restrained bench. Darae did not move it to the mass rail to make numbers solve everything. This question concerned plate location and separate ownership. Unnecessary measurements might make unreceived parts look checked merely because the record grew.
Her lunch relief arrived. The unfinished inquiry did not require an unfinished meal. The assigned worker received current protection and the answer still expected. After hearing the handover, she went to the ring dining room. Weak weight returned beneath her soles, and she felt the calves she had braced since morning.
She brought no blank paper to the table. Yesterday's shared window drawing lay protected in her room; it need not become a story about the box owner. She chose today's soup first. Ordering the same dish as yesterday still made a different day's lunch.
Mujin sent a brief private reply. He had rested after reaching home and had his own assignment today. Darae said she was eating soup on break. Neither inquiry nor anyone else's name entered the message.
“Drawing the bowl too?”
“I'll consider it after eating.”
The laugh was no notification she must hold indefinitely. She closed the screen and ate while the soup was warm. A table alone was no less complete than yesterday's shared one. Nobody had asked for the drawing back. The next private picture remained her unchosen possibility.
After relief, the workshop protection answer awaited her. Jang Dogyeong, the adult currently responsible, had matched loan records and the securing parts' exterior. The protection was communal workshop property. Yeowon could not later discard it with her box. Within the agreed protection handling, its obscured outer face could be viewed.
This authorized neither box opening nor reading private contents. Keeping restraints in place, the responsible worker unfolded only the flap's folded portion in its permitted direction. Darae watched with the explanation. Nobody rolled the box over to hunt for an attachment on its far face. Even a small object needed the appropriate hands.
The opened flap revealed a thin exterior pocket. Beneath its transparent cover lay a long narrow object, recorded as an accessory plate of the protection. Darae did not announce the tag found from one lit surface. Neither letters nor holes were yet clear.
She compared Yeowon's description again: narrow engraved plate, two holes. The cover edge partly concealed the object. Similar shape was insufficient for return. Dogyeong explained that some users put personal tags in this exterior pocket, but had not witnessed Yeowon placing hers there.
Sodam recorded only found location and observed condition. She invented no history of a plate falling off the box; perhaps the protection pocket had held it from the start. At Yeowon's agreed time for restating the permitted identifying features, they could describe the present view and ask where she had originally put it.
The worker secured the flap again according to the original handling material. A portion briefly unfolded for observation must not remain loose for the next handover. Darae watched protection restored after the search. A single line saying tag candidate seen might hide those hands.
Sodam used separate words for the closed pocket and opened outer flap. Nobody would read it as opening the pocket itself. Seeing that heading, Darae thought the next worker might avoid repeating a motion. Already viewed and still obscured remained different even for a small plate.
Catalog acquired another related entry: the exterior-pocket observation a person had entered. The software had neither read a name itself nor discovered an owner. Darae retained tag candidate rather than silently upgrading uncertainty. The little line held only what was known.
At the afternoon contact, Yeowon heard the pocket's position. She first said she might have used it, then decided to check her original loan instructions. Memory need not become confidence quickly. Declining the box did not impose a rush on tag identification, Darae told her.
Before duty ended, nothing more was opened. The current worker received box, protection and pocket condition separately, along with confirmed request authority and checks still needed before final handover. Sharing one bench did not erase two owners. The next assigned worker had something readable to receive.
At home, Darae left her own bent tag inside its bag sleeve. It was another object from today's inquiry. She looked briefly at the window picture, where two people's lines differed at the centre. Tonight she added none.
On the next shift, the morning of day ninety-nine, Yeowon's follow-up confirmed she had put her plate in the protection pocket. A new permitted exterior observation offered another question. The visible face carried no name. Darae did not close the record over that blank. Finding a tag now meant asking which side of the plate they had not yet seen.
