The paper brought downstairs was smaller than Sera expected. She had been imagining the weight of a great bundle. The custodian had brought the permitted face and the record identifying it. The whole past had not come down onto their table.
It was midday on the two hundredth day. Yesterday's eleventh departure and tenth limited round trip had produced a reference for the low groove's upper edge; its lower end remained unread. Today she and Varen would examine the old received bundle's use marking within the agreed scope. There was no sea voyage.
Varen sat with his right leg comfortable. The downstairs place spared him additional stairs. Sera had a chair from which her knee could rest too. Adjusting their seats did not make the old words easier.
First the custodian explained the permitted face. Private names were masked; identification of the received bundle and the use-record wording remained visible. Sera did not begin asking whether the entire paper behind it was intact. She had received the viewing scope. Now she could examine that face.
The receipt marking matched the bundle in which they had previously identified the enclosure containing limiting wording. The custodian read the grounds for that connection. Sera recorded that she had heard this permitted identification, rather than claiming to have compared the complete original herself.
Beneath the use heading lay a short sentence: for reference in selecting outer observation positions. She read its final words again. Reference. Neither lane confirmation nor resident transport appeared there. Varen slowly read the sentence aloud too.
Below it stood: together with the return-conditions enclosure below.
Her hand wanted the next line before her eyes had finished this one. If the enclosure had been used alongside the sheet, perhaps Varen might hurt less. But this was a record saying so, not a view of everything done on an earlier sea.
The custodian could identify that line as referring to the limiting enclosure in the same received bundle. Establishing who had unfolded which version on which day and boat required other material and access beyond the masked scope. Today's documents did not include a complete log of implementation.
Sera wrote two sentences separately. The bundle's use record named reference for selecting observation positions and named the return-conditions enclosure alongside it. The version actually used at a particular site remained unestablished. She did not hide the second beneath the first in smaller letters.
Varen was silent. She supplied neither relief nor sorrow on his behalf. His right hand paused at the table's edge. Then he said his own shortened copy still omitted movement conditions.
“Even if they're written together over there, it doesn't put them back on my paper.”
“No.”
Today's evidence narrowed the received bundle's recorded purpose. It did not remove his omission from another face.
He admitted that, knowing this, he had briefly searched that line for a way out. Sera did not immediately tell him it was all right. He had named his own wish. She could read the visible answer beside him; she could not settle the wish by answering in its place.
The custodian explained the date range's relationship to the bundle. Sera guessed no concealed names. The declared reference purpose did not establish whether the selected position had actually been adopted.
A door opened. Wind shifted a masking corner. Her hand moved, then stopped. The custodian covered the material and closed the door in the proper order. An accidental glimpse was no invitation to enlarge the viewing. Varen lowered his eyes; she looked at her notes. After the permitted face was checked again, they continued. The unseen names remained unknown without making the words they could read less real.
Sera widened her margin. Beside an eye permitted to read a heading, there also needed to be room for something deliberately left unread. No pleasing line completed that space.
“How should I say used?” she asked.
Separate the use described by the record from actual implementation, the custodian answered. She chose recorded as a reference purpose instead of opened a route. Shortening the sentence must not enlarge its claim again.
Varen could not establish from memory whether the paper had reached a particular field site or who had unfolded it. Thinking longer had brought images, but he could not yet divide them by day. She inserted none into the current blank. He drank water; nobody pressed him to remember harder. Most of today's permitted reading was finished.
She could feel how another turn of paper might seem to promise the actual user's name. Wanting it could not extend their scope. Yesterday's groove reference could no more describe an absent earlier boat than the tabletop could become that day's sea.
She had headed her notes Purpose of the Old Lane. She marked that out. Lane was already too large. Record of Reference Purpose in the Received Bundle stayed closer to the paper actually found. Varen read the heading and nodded. She did not record what he might have felt about its offering neither the release nor confession he wanted.
A short summary could come for confirmation tomorrow, the custodian said. Sera would issue no large external conclusion from these notes. Varen agreed only to the wording read and the continuing fact of his omission. Actual implementation remained a separate unknown line.
The custodian gathered the material in order. Sera placed her own sheet on its support and waited before rising. Sitting had stiffened her knee. Getting an answer did not oblige her body to hurt less. Varen wanted a little longer in his chair too.
They watched the emptied table. For a moment she expected a long, beautiful story from his youth. What he actually said was that this chair was lower than he had expected.
She could not keep from laughing. His mouth moved a little too. Her chair made extending her knee awkward, she said. Next time they should ask about the height first. Even on a day spent reading old events, a chair needed to fit a present body.
At a late lunch, she told Nume the record named observation-position reference together with the return-conditions enclosure.
“Whether they really kept the conditions for coming back is still separate?”
“Yes.”
Yesterday's voyage record should not be added to that old face, they said. Sera admitted how close she had come to doing it. After the safe return, every use of returning had briefly seemed to lean in the same direction. Nume listened without attaching a boat comparison to every sentence. Today she liked that.
They ate something warm at the same table. She mentioned that Varen had spoken of looking for a way out.
“Was that something you could pass on to me?” Nume asked.
She stopped. The public extent of the reading and his private words were different. She had hurried when she repeated the exact expression, she said.
“I won't ask further.”
She would need to tell Varen herself. Being careful with somebody else's uncertainty had not kept her from crossing the boundary of his speech. The food felt heavier.
“You don't have to finish doing everything well before you finish eating,” Nume said quietly.
“That doesn't remove what I did.”
“No.”
They picked up their spoons again, leaving the difference where it belonged.
That afternoon she asked when Varen could hear her. She said she had carried his private expression into her explanation to Nume, failing to separate the public record from what he had told her of himself.
He looked at her for a while.
“Ask first next time, for that.”
“I will.”
One apology did not grant all future words. He wanted no added explanation sent to Nume now. If they had already said they would ask no more, let that boundary stand. Sera accepted his decision.
Someone reading his record did not have to become a perfect person for somebody else's accuracy, he added. She did not take the sentence as praise that should make her light again immediately. His shortened copy's omission remained his responsibility too. Neither of them supplied one answer to release the other.
Before supper Tio wanted to move his paper boat to another support. The table was needed for food. Sera's important diagram did not give her endless possession of its surface. She gathered the sheets and put them inside.
He supported the boat without working his finger hard. It was not fully healed. Today the reading paper had come downstairs and his boat had moved too, she said.
“Keep mine out of the departure count.”
She laughed. Miran had found the clothes they needed in the new place. The eaves photograph inquiry had no fresh answer. When asked, Sera briefly described the recorded reference purpose and the still-unknown use. She did not make another long speech about why old paper had supplied no date for going home.
The evening record held at eleven departures and ten limited round trips. Twenty residents remained at Roan. Both stones stayed clear; no clapper was fitted. Today's addition was a line of recorded purpose, with its limit beside it. At night she left space for tomorrow's summary, and in her private notes kept the mistake of passing on Varen's words. Sea, paper and a person's speech had different edges. She did not try to draw everything she had learned on one map.
