The crossed words were still readable: General Receiving Desk.
Below them, Temporary Holding had been written in a different hand. Seorin studied the retained sending-sheet copy on the next assigned morning. Two destinations occupied the same field. Neither supplied a second property receiver by itself. Beside the correction stood a reference to a routing instruction. She asked for that instruction before choosing an arrow.
The supplier had provided the relevant face through designated company intake. Its original stayed with the responsible custodian. The company officer placed yesterday's holding acknowledgment nearby. It connected the envelope with the worker now due to explain the movement from the post-response staging position. Seorin could read an arrival. Today she needed to know what had happened before it.
The worker's account began at the staging table. They had been assigned to carry one envelope, checked against the related handover reference, using a loose protective sheet underneath. They could see the name label when it was presented for the relevant check. They had not received the envelope from Haeun directly. Their own hands entered the route after the field response, at that assigned table.
“Did you go to the first desk?”
Yes. Seorin moved her pencil away from the line she had nearly drawn straight to holding. The worker had followed the first destination. A staff member there had checked the work reference and directed them to temporary holding. Had the envelope changed hands? No. They had retained it on the loose sheet while the routing question was settled.
The general desk had received a question, rather than the property. Its short mark appeared on the sending sheet as redirected. Seorin asked who had made it and what the worker had witnessed. The staff member had written the correction after confirming the assigned receiving position. The worker had watched that action. The related desk record and responsible explanation were available for comparison.
The company officer read the new route aloud: staging position, general desk, temporary holding. Three positions, two property handovers at its ends. The intermediate stop belonged on the line without becoming a third intake. Seorin wrote the distinction beside the arrow. A person could be delayed at a receiving desk while still holding the thing nobody there had received.
How had the wrong destination entered the first field? The staging sender had used a general routing instruction before the specific holding arrangement was confirmed. That was the supplied explanation, not yet the sender's own account. Seorin asked for the actual instruction's scope and revision. The correction on the movement sheet might be supported without every reason for the earlier choice being established today.
At the pause the screen dimmed automatically. The company officer moved the pointer and the crossed words returned. For a moment Seorin had been staring at her own reflection. Her mouth was tight. She loosened it, drank water and read the field again. The screen had gone dark because of a current setting. No lost original had come back when it lit.
A relevant desk-record face arrived before noon. Its entry concerned a routing inquiry for the stated work reference, with property not taken into custody there. The responsible staff member confirmed directing the carrier to the assigned temporary holding position. They remembered the worker retaining the protected item. They could not describe every part of the envelope's surface from behind that desk.
The accounts met at the routing action. Seorin did not describe them as completely independent merely because they had separate names in the work records. Their limits and the documentary match were enough to state what the comparison supported. The correction had been made during the movement, not silently inserted afterward by somebody preparing today's explanation. The retained sheet carried the change.
The revised destination was where the actual temporary receiver had recorded accepting the envelope. The giving worker described handing it over there and withdrawing the empty loose protection. The receiver's earlier account met that action. Before passing it over, the worker had shown the front for the relevant identification. One envelope moved from their support to the assigned holding position.
“Were you asked to sign that it had been opened?”
No. The field confirmed handover. Nobody described opening the private letter. Seorin retained the word opened only where the outer transport cover was later released at preservation intake. That cover had not yet joined the envelope at today's staging movement. A useful question about the signature should not drag a later accessory backward through the journey.
At lunch she walked outside for a few minutes. Wind pressed a discarded receipt against the curb before lifting it again. She watched it turn, then looked away. Other people crossed at the lights. The nearest restaurant door opened and warm air reached the pavement. She chose to eat there rather than keep walking because she had told herself she needed a walk.
Doun's possible exhibition time had changed. His other arrangement might finish later. Could they keep the question open until the next evening? Yes, she answered. She had not taken the possible overlap as a promise. He would let her know when he knew. She ordered food, put the terminal away and found that she was hungry enough to notice the smell properly.
Afterward she sent him the restaurant's ordinary name, because he had asked what she was eating. A photograph of the bowl would have gone cold while she tried to make the light less flat. She did not take one. He sent a short answer about his own lunch. Their different tables needed no picture proving that both meals were real.
During the afternoon, the routing instruction was supplied within the agreed scope. General receiving was a preliminary destination. The later confirmed arrangement named temporary holding for the relevant property movement. A designated correction reached the general desk before the carrier was directed onward. Seorin recorded that receipt separately from the worker's departure from staging. The instruction's arrival did not tell her the exact minute the envelope began moving.
The staging sender's current supplement accepted using the preliminary direction. They had not confirmed the specific holding position before dispatching the worker. That was their action. They could explain the arrangement they knew then without guaranteeing that the first route was the only possible authorized route in the building. Seorin asked which later record had been corrected to reflect the stop.
The movement summary had shown a direct route to temporary holding. Its writer had used the final destination and omitted the routing stop. The actual destination was right; the description of how it was reached was incomplete. The original summary would remain, linked to the sending sheet, desk inquiry and supplemental account. A correction did not require pretending the envelope had vanished during an ordinary wrong turn.
The company officer asked whether the general desk should now appear as a custodian. Seorin pointed to the object retained in the worker's hands. It should appear as a routing contact. The difference mattered for the next question: no extra transfer needed explaining there. They could spend their remaining comparison time on the hands at staging rather than invent a missing pair at every place someone had stood.
Yunjae's established route acknowledged the revised movement description. No unsupported direct route remained in the current supplement. The original versions and their grounds stayed linked. The relevant desk had not received the envelope; temporary holding had. Seorin read the distinction back. A documented interruption now occupied a proper place between two supported property handovers.
Near closing, the staging position's own incoming record was located. Its face would need provision limits because other property appeared nearby. Seorin requested only the relevant envelope entry and a responsible receiving explanation. A whole table's contents did not become hers to inspect because one item had passed over it. The custodian would prepare the permitted area rather than send an unrestricted photograph.
The initial provision description included an orientation note: label down. Seorin looked at the giving worker's account of showing the label at temporary holding. When had the envelope been turned? She sent the narrow question through the officer. Turning an outside surface was not opening a letter, but it was still an action someone could describe. No exchange or hidden content followed from the difference by itself.
She left the company while the answer was being prepared. Outside, Doun was waiting for a separately agreed short walk. She had asked that afternoon whether he had twenty minutes. He did. They did not turn those minutes into an exhibition decision. He asked how far she wanted to go. To the stop by the next crossing, she answered. Her legs wanted movement more than distance.
She offered her hand after changing the bag to the other shoulder. They passed a shop whose door was propped open with a plain wedge. Doun glanced at the support and then away. What? She asked. He had been imagining whether his practice piece could do that instead. Would it? Probably badly, he replied. A cup support with ambitions. She laughed at the dry answer.
He had not brought the piece. She did not need it present every time she saw him. They talked about a book he had borrowed and how little space its print left between lines. She liked space around a paragraph, she said. He thought he might be reading too late at night. Both might be true. Neither answer required an improved version of the other person's habit.
At the stop she wanted a brief embrace before parting. He asked whether the bottle would press into her side. She moved the bag first. Then his arms came around her, light enough to leave when she wanted. The bus was still several minutes away. She did not count the embrace against the time they had agreed for walking, and he did not ask for a longer plan in return.
At home she checked the door once and washed the bottle. The next notice said the worker had turned the envelope to present its front at handover. A specific exterior action, not a new opening. With that question answered, she could face the earlier staging intake. Its masked record used a different word for the envelope's purpose: return. Before she let that word choose a destination, she needed to learn who had written it and to whom they had meant it to go.
