The pale surface was not part of the envelope. In the wider photograph, its edge continued straight beneath the brown paper.
On the next assigned morning, designated company intake supplied the adhesive-side image and the wider relevant front view. These were permitted areas from retained preservation photographs, the supplier explained, rather than new pictures. Seorin recorded source and receipt. Yesterday's account of hands above an empty support could now meet an actual image of the other direction.
The adhesive-side photograph showed the envelope's outside and part of its support. Nothing in that supplied view showed the flap unfolded. Relevant positions corresponded with the earlier exterior-condition record. She put visible image and written explanation alongside each other. A photograph of one outside condition did not certify the seal's entire past. Today she had another view, rather than every previous hour.
The broader front view showed a pale backing board beneath the envelope. Near one corner was a small hole, with a blue line running diagonally beside it. Seorin paused. The colour recalled the blue ties on the old cable route. But she did not yet know whether the line was a strip of material or a surface mark. She wrote blue, and stopped there.
She did not connect it to Doun's old work. A shared colour was too short a route for responsibility to travel. Could the supplier establish whether this board was photographic equipment or protective backing brought with the property? Being photographed together did not give the objects one starting point. The pale rectangle had become visible today; its history had not appeared with its edge.
The company officer took out the register recording receipt of one envelope. Absence from that counted field did not establish that no board existed, Seorin said. It might have been separate equipment, with its management record elsewhere. Before adding another item to the intake quantity, she wanted to know what the quantity counted. Tools beside an object could remain outside its property entry.
The photographer's present supplement arrived through the agreed route. They remembered the handler putting the pale board beneath the envelope. They had not seen all the board's earlier movements. Nor could they establish it as equipment already waiting beside the support before the handler approached. Seorin reread the beginning of that continuous observation: the view near the designated entrance, not the beginning of the whole journey.
“Did you see the board being carried in too?”
The photographer had seen the handler supporting the object underneath with both hands, but not the board's whole edge while they crossed the doorway. It became clearly distinguishable after placement. Seorin kept the carried shape apart from the separately identified board. The picture had answered what lay underneath. Where it first came underneath still belonged to another question.
A question went to the worker responsible for the board's markings. Seorin did not privately send the photograph to Jeongu and ask whether the blue belonged to his old cable work. No current ground linked it to that work. She shortened the proposed request to position and shape. A familiar colour in her memory should not choose an unrelated person to question.
While she waited, a cleaning notice went up in the company corridor. Somebody ahead changed direction. The usual passage was temporarily closed, with a marked alternative open. Seorin followed the indicated way to refill her bottle. One closed door had not shut the whole building. She could check the safe present route directly, without asking an old photograph to explain it.
Back at her desk, she looked again at the order of the two images. The supplier's display order was not itself the old capture timetable. Yesterday the photographer had described front first, then adhesive side. Was there a retained management record supporting creation order too? She was not requesting that an uncalibrated camera value be converted into standard time by assumption.
The supplier supplemented the connection: the photographs were managed as two directions of the same intake. Consecutive filenames did not provide a new clock. Seorin accepted that scope. The original 17:56 stayed uncalibrated; the 780-second delay stayed as established. Two photographs had arrived without bringing a ruler that could measure those other numbers. She left them in their own places.
Before lunch the board-management explanation arrived. Blue was the working board's identifying surface mark, not a cable tie. Relevant management records and the photographed hole's position had been compared. Seorin kept her initial colour association in her working notes and marked where she withdrew it. Receiving an answer did not require pretending the mistaken association had never occurred to her.
The board's route remained separate. It was shared equipment used to support property between preservation intake and the photography position, the custodian explained. Actual use on that day required the handler's account and the movement record. A tool's usual purpose did not establish one specific use. Seorin wrote the intended function now, without quietly changing it into a completed historical action.
Should they visit and judge whether it was the same object? The officer asked. Even if present equipment remained, Seorin had no authority to reconstruct the envelope's preceding journey herself. First they could receive the relevant handler explanation and records. Any further exterior viewing would need its scope agreed. Moving an empty board now would not produce an old property transfer.
At lunch Doun said he planned to look for practice material. Was he choosing his first piece to cut? Yes. She did not ask him to enlarge it for her bottle too. He wanted to begin with a support for his own cup. She did not want a learner's first object abruptly becoming somebody else's future present because she happened to be interested.
One rounded corner was harder than he had expected, he wrote. She had never tried and could not call it easy. That was why he had kept the paper square, he replied. She liked its visible changes. Curiosity about his paper did not require a promise of finished wood. She could follow what he was doing at the stage where he actually was.
After eating, she briefly took out her own cup drawing. Its oversized handle still sat beside the round body. The small fold remained when she slipped it back into protection. She did not look for a matching mark beside the work board's hole. After a morning of inspecting objects, separate marks could start feeling like evidence of each other. These papers had their own places.
During the afternoon, the agreed questions for the actual handler were gathered through the company officer. Where had they received the envelope, what had supported it, and when had this board been selected? They could also describe the post-photography return within whatever part they personally handled. Seorin left out the assumption that this worker knew the whole process merely by joining it.
The supplied explanation retained the board as shared equipment outside the property's intake quantity. She did not change one envelope into envelope plus board in that register. Had any later sentence actually called them a single received object? She asked. The purpose was to understand what moved, rather than manufacture another property item from a photograph's newly visible margin.
The officer brought a relevant summary. It said the envelope had been received together with its support. Which support: the photography table, or the travelling board? The wording did not say. Seorin stopped at the sentence. Beneath the route they had narrowed to one envelope lay a tool whose carrier was still undescribed. That did not supply new proof of physical receipt.
What had the later writer used as the basis for together with its support? The pale surface visible in the photograph, the reply said. They had not witnessed transport. Seorin retained that account beside the original sentence. An object seen underneath during photography had become an object assumed to remain underneath throughout movement. This particular inference now had a place where it could be withdrawn.
Yunjae's established route received the two permitted views, board-purpose explanation and later sentence's grounds separately. No new material showed an opened envelope or returned original key. Seorin kept the photographed adhesive-side state within its visible time. The receiving officer read the limit back. The preserved property itself had stayed where it was; no afternoon question had required moving it.
Near closing, notice came of an explanation from the handler responsible for moving the envelope after preservation intake to photography. Whether that person had also carried it earlier remained unanswered. Seorin left the first question open: where had the actual envelope first entered these hands? Looking farther down the photograph had brought her back to the beginning of a person's action.
After work she stopped at a bookshop alone. She wanted to see whether the next volume of her book was there. Following the spines, she misread one title, recognized the similar letters and put it back. That mistake did not invalidate every observation of her day. She bought nothing; another book already lay open at home. She walked toward the bus stop without asking Doun to account for his route.
After returning home, he said he had chosen material. A small practice piece; it might never become a usable support. She did not promise to wait for a finished photograph tomorrow. Had it felt the size he imagined in his hand? Smaller, he answered. Had his hand spread too widely on paper? Perhaps the cup was unusually large. Then he corrected himself: he had probably drawn too small.
She liked that he could answer easily. Ease tonight did not erase responsibility for his old cable work, but neither required turning the evening into another interview. Would he want to show the practice piece when they next met? Even if it went badly, yes. She would like that. They would choose a date when their schedules were known. Finishing an object was not an entrance requirement.
Before bed she checked her door once and washed her bottle. The pale board remained in work material; Doun's support was still a plan. Similar colours had not given separate things one journey. Next shift she would ask about a real hand before asking the photographed surface to carry any farther story.
