The third entrance had not been hidden. It had simply been absent from Seorin's first checking sheet.
On the morning of December 31, the packaging collection entrance stood open in the alley behind the Shared Stacks. The company had defined the additional scope; operations had matched the actual worker and area. From the alley waiting position, Seorin examined the old SORTING ROOM label beside the button. It matched yesterday's photograph.
Lee Suwan came out. An adult employee, Suwan received packaging during this interval. Yesterday had been the first time anybody asked them why the bell reached reception. Usually they met people from the advance transport schedule. The call served mainly to summon a colleague in the same area.
Yesterday's waiting collector had also replied through the current desk. There was an arrival time and an account of pressing once. Seorin had not witnessed that action. She kept the person's explanation separate from her own observations. Still, the unexplained call had narrowed into a question they could check.
Munseong examined present wiring and function through the specialist's procedure. The third button also led to the same receivers. Yesterday's result acquired an added scope note. Seorin paused over the correction. It was not that she had found a false clue yesterday. What she had seen had not been everything.
“Down here, we don't know who's upstairs,” Suwan said.
Upstairs, Miran had not known who arrived below. Each had assumed the other knew their side. Hearing the same bell differed from knowing the same situation. Seorin put the current preparation-room name beside the old sorting-room name.
A short level receiving area lay beyond the alley door. Separate stairs led up. Carts did not simply travel up those stairs. Packaging was received here and moved by a route distinct from upper deliveries. Seorin did not join the two lines into one on the plan.
The initial request had concerned ordinary user entrances, Suwan explained. They had thought of this area as separate transport work. The company's supplied material had likewise centered that scope. Seorin did not begin with an accusation that somebody concealed it. An overly familiar division had helped remove the question.
Had operations commissioned it wrongly? Miran asked. Seorin had received today's changed checking scope first. She was not assigning each person's proportion of responsibility here. But three places sharing one call needed a joined operating explanation. People worked within separate areas; the bell did not respect their lines.
After equipment checking, they would observe actual packaging collection. Time, workers and stopping method were matched. Folded boxes lay on a cart. Low from the side, they showed many folded layers from above. Empty boxes kept being described as if they contained no object at all.
Doun watched the route from his instructed place. As Suwan lifted a bundle, it hid the line before the door. Even empty packaging could obstruct the carrier's forward view. Seorin stopped the movement and asked the responsible worker to rematch height and carrying method. Looking light did not establish that somebody could see ahead.
Suwan usually carried that much; the weight was familiar. Seorin was not judging weight. From the agreed route, the threshold and waiting person had disappeared. Suwan set the bundle down and checked their actual sight line. A stack that seemed acceptable at eye level tipped above their arms when moving.
Today's adult collector, Jang Muntaek, first showed the receiving container and securing method. Nobody added another layer merely to test it. Suwan moved the defined amount into the actual receiver's care. They would not push more from behind while somebody stood at the threshold.
Some bundles had cord handles. Others had to be held around their folded faces. Even the same quantity might need different handling, Suwan said; they would reassess the amount per journey. Seorin did not bind it for them. The people doing the transport needed to determine the method and its responsibilities.
Would it be quicker for Muntaek to wait inside? Some collectors already did, Suwan answered. How far inside, and who received that state? Seorin asked. Asking a transporter to wait and admitting them into an active work area had different conditions. A faster receipt did not remove the waiting person.
The designated outside waiting place had only partial rain cover. Nobody was getting wet today. That did not support an instruction to wait there unchanged in rain. Seorin recorded today's weather and asked operations to define an available alternative. Standing somewhere briefly was not a check for every day.
Could everybody report to upper reception? Miran suggested. Suwan could not first send all packaging and goods upstairs. Questions that had lived apart met physically. One entrance might simplify the names while tangling the actual routes.
“One trip up the stairs costs more than three names,” Doun said.
Suwan paid that price several times daily, they replied. Seorin marked the real absences from each position. They could not remove the stairs. They could decline to write one person into two levels simultaneously.
Before lunch, workers from all three areas described their actual actions in turn. Glass door for readers; steel door for upper deliveries; lower entrance for packaging collection. Exceptional arrivals had their own receiving route. The table looked complicated, but each person was telling others a route they alone had known.
Yunseul proposed asking which area had called when a bell sounded. Through the speaker? Miran asked. Munseong explained that the present equipment made a one-way call. It did not support conversation. A sound reaching them did not create a return path for speech. Seorin attached no new function with words.
They compared actual contact methods with staffing hours. Operations chose a combination of advance booking contact, a currently answering desk, and arrival waiting guidance. Equipment alteration stayed separate. Nobody selected the indiscriminate distribution of workers' private numbers.
The notice had grown long, Miran said. Yunseul read user sentences separately from the staff handling table. Seorin did not paste in Riverside Rehearsal Rooms' answer. Here there were three doors, different levels and packaging collection. Familiar questions still required this building's feet to find their answers.
The company reviewer asked again who would actually staff the three areas. Seorin sent the present roster and the operator's proposed adjustments. She could not guarantee employment capacity or invent shifts. The operations manager retained remaining use restrictions and the next operational handover.
During preparation, Yunseul came downstairs, then received notice of an upstairs call. They did not assume Suwan had taken their place. Yunseul asked Miran who currently held it. Counting a passing colleague as automatic relief could undo the table they had just matched.
Packaging collection actually finished within the adjusted scope. Muntaek compared received bundles and remaining items before departing by designated transport. Suwan cleared the lower entrance and area. Seeing a closed door, Seorin did not mark every task ended. The receiving state and remaining storage still had records.
The first line of one read NOTHING TO RECEIVE.
She pictured the folded boxes that had just left in front of her. Perhaps empty packaging was written that way, Miran suggested. Suwan had not written that line. Muntaek's present receipt recorded the bundles.
“What is this sheet for?”
The next shift used it to prepare for upper incoming deliveries. Packaging collection belonged to another table. Yet the lower entrance could be active during a period that reception read as having nobody to receive.
It would be easy to erase the phrase. Without knowing who wrote it and on what basis, the next sheet might reproduce it. Miran requested clarification from the original preparer. Seorin did not make people recount received boxes against present stock. The completed receipt already had its responsible route.
Suwan had not seen that table and had not understood why a person ringing below sometimes waited for guidance. Miran had assumed they were being received separately downstairs. Neither side had been working in the wrong room. One area's nothing had covered the other's something.
Seorin and Doun matched the actions required for a return journey between reception and the lower door. Running was not a method for shortening it. Walking normally and receiving actual access still left calls in another area. Three entrances needed more time than three opening movements.
She placed both tables' purposes beside their times. There was no evidence of stolen minutes like the Eundam display. The same minute here belonged to different kinds of work. Fitting an old incident's answer into unknown numbers could hide today's necessary question.
Year-end impatience briefly appeared. Lower collection was over; could they fix next year's material? Miran asked. Yunseul had already received tomorrow's roster. The calendar crossed midnight, but its paper reached the next worker earlier.
Operations actually explained the current table's meaning and remaining receipt to that worker. Unconfirmed changes stayed unimplemented. Seorin sent temporary guidance and later necessary checks separately. A changing year did not automatically close her report.
Could they take down the old room sign now? Suwan asked. Miran would first match sign management and replacement directions. Removing the trace in yesterday's photograph did not come first. Seorin linked the date and current explanation to her checking material.
After equipment return, Doun asked whether their days off overlapped in the new year. Seorin named only confirmed days on her current roster. He suggested a meal; she chose an available evening. Neither handed the other every unfilled space in the coming month.
At home, she found the table preparer's reply added to company material. She read its permitted contents. NOTHING TO RECEIVE had not meant no goods to carry. It meant no scheduled receiving person.
But at that line's time, one person had been recorded arriving before Muntaek.
